Yom Kippur, the holiest Jewish holiday, is celebrated every year. It is also known as the "Day of Atonement" in English. In preparation for the next year, the holiday focuses on repenting of personal sins and turning to God.

The Jewish belief that Moses brought down the second set tablets of the Ten Commandments from Mount Sinai to celebrate the holiday is the root of the holiday. His descent occurred on the tenth of Tishri, 40 after the Israelites had committed sin.

They worshipped a golden calf instead of praying to God, and disobeyed God. Moses arrived and forgave their sins.

Yom Kippur is primarily about atonement and repentance. Fasting is a significant part of Yom Kippur.

According to the American Jewish Committee, Jewish people must refrain from eating and drinking for 25 hours during the holiday. The AJC notes that it is customary to abstain from other earthly pleasures such as bathing or wearing leather shoes. This was considered a luxury in ancient times.

Other than prayer and fasting there are many other traditions. White is worn to symbolize purity and renewal, as Jews repent for past sins.

Although the holiday is solemn, it's not sad. After a day of repentance sins are forgiven, and the slate is cleared for the new year. The shofar is blown to celebrate the end of Yom Kippur.
