Sunday’s action at Kohl Center brought out a full 40 minutes of relentless basketball from both teams, but it was Purdue (21-2, 10-2 Big Ten) who took control of the second half. They beat Wisconsin (16-6, 8-3 Big Ten) for sole possession of first place in the Big 10 standings and lie 1.5 games ahead.
Lance Jones scored 20 points while Barden Smith added 19 for the Boilermakers.
Edey grabbed his 55th career double-double after finishing with 18 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks in Purdue’s latest win. It’s the 7-foot-4 Canadian native’s 74th straight game in which he scored in double figures.
Wisconsin did a great job of holding the Boilermakers off the three-point line, while also forcing some turnovers in the first half. The Badgers held Edey to just five points by halftime as they kept it within two, trailing 34-32.
Purdue responded by taking command of the second half. The Boilermakers led for the entire final period, but Wisconsin’s Tyler Wahl kept it close with his season-high 20-point performance.
Sunday marks Purdue’s seventh consecutive victory while Wisconsin suffered its second straight loss.
The next bout between the two teams comes on the last two dates of the season when Purdue hosts the Badgers on March 10.
Until then, the Boilermakers will move on to host the Indiana Hoosiers Feb 10. That same day, Wisconsin will head to the University of Michigan to take on the Wolverines.
