‘UFO’ over N.J. has a simple explanation. (Don’t call Mulder and Scully.)

It wasn’t a bird, it wasn’t a plane, and it definitely wasn’t Superman.

It also wasn’t a UFO.

But that didn’t stop some from thinking aliens had decided to visit North Jersey Monday night.

People in Bergen, Passaic and Essex counties were captivated enough by a flying spheroid with a glowing bottom that they pulled over on the side of the road to take videos.

“I can’t believe it,” one woman said in a video taken near Route 21.

“Hey, it’s a UFO, right?” a man asked in one clip.

“Yes!!” a woman exclaimed.

A blueish light was visible at the bottom of the object and a small red light pulsed on top.

“Look, the whole street is f---ing stopped," said a man in another clip. "There’s a f---ing flying spaceship.”

On closer inspection, the object was nothing more than a Goodyear blimp, flying over a Giants game at MetLife Stadium. The company’s logo was clearly visible in videos recorded closer to the stadium.

The tire company’s airship was positioned at the East Rutherford venue as the Giants lost to the Steelers, 26-16, in their home opener.

Still, those who were far enough away to mistake the blimp for something else ran with the whole UFO thing, speculating that this was just the latest development in a disastrous 2020. After all, we did just hear about possible life on Venus.

For an evening at least, New Jersey had become something like the movie “Independence Day," infusing social media with what amounted to a diversion from weightier issues like the pandemic and wildfires in the West.
