Antonio Conte could not inspire Tottenham to a Champions League comeback on his return after five weeks away from the club as AC Milan edged through to the quarter-finals in a drab round of 16 second leg.
Spurs manager Conte endured a frustrating night on his return from gallbladder surgery, watching his wasteful players go out of the competition courtesy of Brahim Diaz’s early goal in the first leg, with Cristian Romero’s late dismissal for a second yellow card compounding his side’s misery.
The limp exit from Europe means Spurs are almost certain not to win a trophy this season, having gone out of the FA Cup at second-tier Sheffield United and fallen 18 points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal in Conte’s absence.

In a flat performance, Tottenham had a solitary shot on target before top scorer Harry Kane saw his header from Heung min-Son's delivery - one of the few accurate crosses the hosts produced - brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Mike Maignon in added time.
Former Liverpool striker Divock Origi then almost gave Milan breathing space when the visitors capitalised on their readiness to break, his strike hitting a post with Tottenham goalkeeper Fraser Forster beaten.
Milan were worthy winners of the tie, almost taking the lead early in the second half when Diaz saw his thumping strike beaten away by Forster.
147 - Tottenham 0-0 Milan has ended Spurs' run of 147 consecutive home games in all competitions without a goalless draw, since a 0-0 against Swansea at Wembley in the Premier League in September 2017 (5 years and 173 days ago). Drab. pic.twitter.com/pnRC5R64kn

Stefano Pioli's side looked comfortable for much of the contest as they secured a fourth consecutive win and clean sheet in the Champions League, reaching the quarterfinals of the competition for the first time in 11 years.
Tottenham's main objective will now be to qualify for the Champions League again by finishing in the top four of the Premier League.
Milan, who are fifth in Serie A and 18 points behind first-placed Napoli, will discover their opponents in the last eight when the draw is made on March 17.
Toiling Tottenham out with a whimperHaving watched Tottenham struggle from afar in recent weeks, the reliably fiery Conte must have hoped his return would be telling in the most important match of their season so far.
A 1-0 deficit against impressive but hardly daunting opponents seemed a surmountable cause for confidence, only for Spurs to struggle so badly for inspiration during the first half that they barely seemed capable of keeping a single cross in play.
???? For the first time in 11 years AC Milan have qualified for the Champions League quarter-finals.

Conte's characteristic antics were almost the only source of entertainment during the opening 45 minutes, the short-tempered former coach of Milan's arch-rivals, Inter, finding himself in the referee's notebook for an early protest over a foul.
By that time, rash Romero had also been cautioned for a clumsy challenge that was a warning of the recklessness that was to come when the defender hurt himself and Theo Hernandez with a predictable foul to earn his 77th-minute red card.
Romero's manager must have been tempted to replace him but had more pressing considerations among his changes, sending on Pedro Porro, who improved Tottenham's previously negligiblethreat from crossing positions before appearing to be consumed by their collective malaise.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg thrashed in a shot that Maignon palmed over the crossbar as Tottenham pushed, but their pressure never looked intense or ruthless enough to warrant a way back into the tie.
???? Fikayo Tomori enjoyed his return to London as AC Milan knocked Spurs out of the #UCL. Against his teammates tonight he ranked:
1st for blocks (2)1st for successful tackles (3)1st for clearances (4)2nd for times winning possession (7)3rd for successful passes (50) pic.twitter.com/sPSnHespw2

There will inevitably now be questions over Conte and Kane's future. A place in the quarterfinals was eminently there for the taking but, as has so often seemed the case with Tottenham, they failed to seize an opportunity that was well within their reach.
Defeat at Wolves on Saturday - the second of three successive games in which they have failed to score - left Tottenham four points shy of third-placed Manchester United.
Fifth-placed Liverpool are three points behind them with a game in hand – and with many more performances as poor as this in their remaining 12 league games, Tottenham are unlikely to be back in the Champions League next season.

Ten-man Tottenham are out of the Champions League! Thanks for following our live coverage tonight. We'll have a match report, analysis and more coming up at the top of this page shortly. Milan are in the quarterfinals!
90+5 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Heads in hands all round. Harry Kane's future may be discussed again if Spurs exit the Champions League in a minute or two, but he so nearly dragged them back into this tie there. Inspired goalkeeping saves Milan.
90+3 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Harry Kane flicks a header towards goal from a Heung-min Son freekick and is denied by a brilliant reflex save from Mike Maignon, sprawling to his right to tip the danger away!
Milan then speed to the other end and hit the post through Divock Origi's low shot!
90 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
There will be six minutes of stoppage time. That won't make any difference if Spurs can't find greater quality.
87 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Richarlison does well to nod a ball on inside the penalty area and keep Spurs in with half a chance of creating danger.
Davinson Sanchez then loops an uninspired pass towards the edge of the box. Groans ring out.
86 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Ismael Bennacer slings a low shot from distance towards Fraser Forster, who claims in the Tottenham goal.
Spurs, sensibly, try to locate Harry Kane in the ensuing attack, narrowly failing to succeed.
84 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Spurs want a penalty for a challenge on Davinson Sanchez which was hard to judge accurately at the speed it happened. Replays don't suggest it was worthy of punishment.
Milan race down the other end, where Sandro Tonali has space to shoot inside the penalty area and sees his shot blocked.
The openness of this game should make for a much more exciting final five minutes or so of normal time. Hopefully.
82 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
There were boos at halftime from the home fans and there appear to be more now as Dejan Kulusevski makes way for Davinson Sanchez.
Pedro Porro has the chance to swing in a freekick from a useful position on the left. The substitute appears to have caught the wasteful bug, sending it aimlessly beyond everyone.
79 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Cristian Romero limps down the tunnel after that red card. The tackle on Theo Hernandez was so misjudged that the Spurs defender ended up hurting himself too.
77 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Tottenham are down to 10 men! Cristian Romero, who's been flirting with danger ever since his early yellow card for a clumsy challenge, is booked again and sent off for another poor challenge.
75 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Tottenham win a corner again, this time on their right. Richarlison can't connect with an attempted header on the edge of the penalty area, and Spurs have to start again from beyond the halfway line.
Antonio Conte reacts with annoyance again as another cross sails into Mike Maignon's arms.
75 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Heung-min Son sends a corner from Tottenham's left onto the roof of Mike Maignon's net. Poor again from Spurs.
72 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Who'd have thought there might be an incident involving Richarlison?
Mike Maignon isn't happy with something the Brazil international does when the goalkeeper comes to claim a cross off his head. Maignon pats Richarlison angrily on the head, and the referee has to calm the situation down.
71 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Rafael Leao and Pedro Porro spurn half-chances at either end, then Spurs win a corner on their right. They've still only had one effort on target.
69 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Emerson Royal is replaced by Richarlison.

68 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
This is increasingly end-to-end. Pedro Porro whips in an inviting cross from the right. Harry Kane - looking a little surprised to have seen an accurate delivery tonight - dives in and can only angle a header well wide at the near post.
67 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
A touch of panic from Tottenham amid some disorganised defending from them. Brahim Diaz shows typically neat feet inside the penalty and has a shot blocked, then Fraser Forster comfortably claims a hooked shot on the stretch from Olivier Giroud.
66 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
You wouldn't need to be a tactical genius to expect Milan to keep trying to break. Rafael Leao charges towards the penalty area from the right but can't make much from the opportunity.
64 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Mike Maignon claps his gloves determinedly after that save. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg asks the crowd to make more noise.
With those gestures completed, Pedro Porro whips in a dangerous corner from the right. Fikayo Tomori, who deals with the danger well, goes down briefly with what could be a touch of cramp.
63 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Spurs continue to probe. Heung-min Son cuts inside from a dangerous position and sees a cross blocked, then Harry Kane repeats the trick from the opposite side.
The unlikely figure of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has more success, rampaging inside the box on the right and thumping in a shot that Mike Maignon palms over the crossbar at his near post.
61 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Spurs are having most of the possession at the moment and seem to have more zip and attacking ambition than they did before the interval.
Milan, though, look comfortable and are clearly ready to break. They'll have planned to absorb plenty of pressure if necessary.
60 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
There's an almighty thwack and Pedro Porro slams Tottenham's freekick straight into the Milan defensive wall.
Olivier Giroud hacks the ricochet away.
58 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
A glimmer of encouragement for Spurs, who win a freekick outside the penalty area on the right.
It would take a sensational strike to score from here, but Pedro Porro's over it and looking intent.
55 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
In tonight's other game, Bayern Munich are now 2-0 up on aggregate against visitors Paris St-Germain, who look like they're going out in the round of 16 again.
52 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Ivan Perisic makes way for Pedro Porro. Not surprising to see Antonio Conte shaking his side up early in the second half, given their performance and what's at stake.
50 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Now there's been a shot on target in this game: Milan almost score!
A slick sequence of play from the visitors leads to Junior Messias supplying Brahim Diaz inside the penalty area on the right.
The man who's made the difference in the tie so far can't get a clean shot away among a crowd of defenders at first. Then the rebound falls kindly to him in space and, from a tight angle, he thumps a shot towards goal that Fraser Forster does well to beat away.
Rafael Leao then flashes a shot wide of the far post from the left.
48 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Dejan Kulusevski shifts to his left outside the Milan penalty area on the right, giving himself a little space in which to create in front of Theo Hernandez.
The cross is a decent one, low and towards at least two Tottenham players arriving at speed near the penalty area. Milan clear.
47 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Clement Lenglet goes down following an aerial challenge with Olivier Giroud.
About 30 seconds after play resumes, Brahim Diaz performs a bit of trickery on the halfway line and is brought down by a befuddled Cristian Romero. It's not bookable, but that's not what Spurs will want to see from a defender who is already on a yellow.
46 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
In tonight's other round of 16 tie, it's Bayern Munich 0-0 Paris St-Germain with around 55 minutes played.
Bayern won the first leg 1-0 in Paris. Not a good night so far for Mauricio Pochettino's former sides.
HALF-TIME: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Well, that left a lot to be desired in terms of quality, to put it politely.
Neither side has had a shot on target. Harry Kane went closest with a deflected cross, and Milan - understandably - look content to sit back, although Rafael Leao's threatened.
The visitors remain 1-0 ahead on aggregate and are 45 minutes from reaching the quarterfinals. Tottenham need a fairly sharp uptick in momentum if they're to score the minimum of a goal they require to keep their campaign alive.
45 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
There will be two minutes of added time. In the first, Ivan Perisic does, at least, change the pattern of crossing for Tottenham by delivering a dangerous one from the left, although Mike Maignon plucks it from the air quickly enough.
Emerson Royal then does well to head the danger away with Olivier Giroud ready to swing at the ball from a Milan cross from the right.
42 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
As if to validate Jermaine Jenas' punditry, Kulusevski sends a not-tantalisingly-dangerous cross from the right towards Ivan Perisic at the far post, who nods straight at Mike Maignon.
The Milan goalkeeper hardly needs to move to gather the ball.
39 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
"He's not really had a good 40 minutes at all," says former Spurs midfielder Jermaine Jenas on BT Sport, discussing Dejan Kulusevski.
Stefano Pioli has combined that black suit with white trainers in Milan's technical area, by the way. A classic combination for the modern manager.
37 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Dejan Kulusevski provides Tottenham's latest wasteful cross, sending one from the right straight out of play.
Conte will be having forceful words about that at the break, you'd imagine.
36 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Tottenham come as close as they have so far! Emerson Royal plays in Harry Kane inside the penalty area on the right, who tries to find Ivan Perisic with a low diagonal cross.
The delivery takes a deflection, wrong-footing Mike Maignon at his near post. The goalkeeper readjusts but can only divert the ball behind with a leg.
34 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Tottenham are trying to pressure Milan inside their own penalty area. Unfortunately for Spurs, they have the opportunity to do so on this occasion because of a careless Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg pass that allows the hosts to regain possession.
32 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Not a half-hour anyone will be looking at for shooting inspiration. Junior Messias makes a hash of a shot from a decent position.
30 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Harry Kane advances beyond the halfway line and releases Dejan Kulusevski to his right, who tumbles to his feet.
The home fans are incensed that no foul is awarded - perhaps accusing Theo Hernandez - but the referee reckons Kulusevski slipped and the home players don't appeal for a freekick.
28 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Plenty of endeavour but a lack of cutting edge from Tottenham so far. Milan perhaps look more incisive when they go forward.

26 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Tottenham's Emerson Royal is down inside Milan territory on the right with what looks like a leg problem.
Milan's Theo Hernandez generously asks the midfielder if he's okay. Now a physio is on. This could be a knee or thigh issue. The tape is out.
25 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
There have been sightings of shirtless fans in the away end.

23 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
That's well below what Heung-min Son is capable of. He takes the corner short, then swings a cross beyond the far post when trying to supply Harry Kane.
23 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Heung-min Son tries a shot from distance and sees his effort blocked behind, following the ball over to take a corner from Tottenham's left.
21 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Clement Lenglet receives a possibly overdue booking after elbowing Olivier Giroud in an aerial challenge.
Antonio Conte is also booked after protesting in typically forthright fashion. It's good to see the Spurs boss back.
20 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Spurs rally again after a spell of pressure from Milan. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg tries to exchange a one-two with Harry Kane outside the penalty area, then Ben Davies' touch deserts him on the left, nudging the ball behind from a promising position.
18 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Sharp freekick routine from Milan! Tottenham might have expected them to shoot from this position, but they string together a series of quick passes.
Bruno Tonioli locates Junior Messias in space inside the penalty area on the right, and he drills a low shot wide of the far post. On the touchline, Stefano Pioli can't believe his side haven't hit the target from there.
16 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Cristian Romero goes into the book – and it's fully deserved for a woefully late challenge on Rafael Leao in a dangerous position.
The defender will miss the quarterfinals, should Spurs qualify. One or two home fans might not mind too much when they see him put in tackles like that.
13 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
This has been a decent start by Tottenham - as Antonio Conte's applause from the touchline shows - but Rafael Leao is continuing to cause them concern.
Clement Lenglet clumsily hauls down the livewire on the halfway to stop him racing clear. Lenglet's fortunate not to be booked.
11 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Tottenham break dangerously, moving possession from one penalty area to the other at speed in a move launched by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
Emerson Royal takes aim from just inside the penalty area, seeing his low shot take a deflection off Fikayo Tomori. Mike Maignon claims.
10 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Oliver Skipp plays with disciplinary danger by fouling Rafael Leao – not the midfielder's first infringement during the early part of the game.
The referee has a word with him.
9 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Milan struggle to clear their lines effectively, allowing Spurs to launch an attack that culminates in Mike Maignon claiming a delivery from Harry Kane in his goalmouth.
8 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Dejan Kulusevski races inside Milan's half on the right, building a passage of play that allows Kane to try a low cross from the edge of the penalty area, winning a throw-in.
This is a good spell from Tottenham, backed by a booming crowd.
6 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Ivan Perisic tries to release Dejan Kulusevski with a slick first-time pass from the centre circle, almost sending his teammate away.
It happens too quickly for Pierre Kalulu, who fouls Perisic and sends him wincing to the ground, receiving a warning from the referee.
4 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
This has been a quiet start. Milan play a few more passes around inside their own territory, then send an aimless ball straight into Tottenham's half and out of play.
Visiting manager Stefano Pioli has gone for a suit jacket and roll neck black ensemble tonight.
3 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
AC Milan win a freekick about midway inside Tottenham territory. Theo Hernandez swings it in, and Tottenham clear at the second time of asking after the delivery doesn't quite roll out of play.
2 mins: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
AC Milan play passes around at the back. Antonio Conte folds his arms for a second, then releases them to offer guidance.
Son Heung-min, who's started, spoke yesterday about the importance of having their head coach back to Tottenham's players. Sensible words when you're talking about your boss.
1 min: Tottenham 0-0 Milan
Tottenham start us off, attacking from right to left and immediately trying a long diagonal ball that arrows out of play deep inside Milan territory. An old-school kickoff, there.
2 mins from kickoff: There is a tangibly sensational atmosphere inside the stadium, where Spurs head coach Antonio Conte is in the technical area after five weeks out following gall bladder surgery.
A reminder of the teams!

20 mins from kickoff: The delay to kickoff might make it even more important for both teams to warm up effectively in very cold conditions.
There was conjecture last night that a brief delay to kickoff at Chelsea may have contributed to Borussia Dortmund's Julian Brandt being injured after five minutes of the action.

30 mins from kickoff: The 10-minute delay to kickoff is because both team buses arrived late, according to UEFA.
35 mins from kickoff: Another familiar name in the Milan squad is none other than Divock Origi, who scored Liverpool's second goal in their 2-0 win over Tottenham in the 2019 UEFA Champions League final.
Origi also lifted the UEFA Super Cup, the FIFA Club World Cup, the 2019/20 Premier League and, last season, the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup while at Anfield. It's a fair haul.
Meanwhile, kickoff has been delayed until 20:10 GMT.

100 mins from kickoff: Tonight's game is the sixth time Tottenham and AC Milan have played each other.
Before the first leg, the fixture had last taken place at the same stage of the Champions League during the 2010/11 season, when Spurs' Peter Crouch scored the only goal of the tie in the 80th minute at the San Siro.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic played every minute of those games, but he won't be involved tonight as he's not registered for the Champions League.

120 mins from kickoff: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News' coverage of the decider between Tottenham and AC Milan for a place in this season's UEFA Champions League quarterfinals!
Defeats at Sheffield United and Wolves in the FA Cup and Premier League mean that Spurs' only realistic chance of a trophy this season is in Europe, where they begin this round of 16 second leg 1-0 behind because of Brahim Diaz's seventh-minute goal at the San Siro on February 14 — Tottenham's fourth successive knockout-stage defeat without scoring.
The visitors have the worst defensive record of the top seven in Serie A by four goals, conceding 32 in the top flight so far. A fifth clean sheet in six games would guarantee Stefano Pioli's players the prestige of becoming the first Milan side to reach the last eight of the Champions League since 2012.
Tottenham vs AC Milan lineupsSpurs' injury picture remains unchanged ahead of this clash with midfield pair Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves Bissouma both still out, alongside club captain Hugo Lloris.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg returned to the starting side after missing the first leg through suspension.
Tottenham starting XI (3-4-3): Forster (GK) — Romero, Lenglet, Davies – Emerson, Skipp, Hojbjerg, Perisic – Son, Kulusevski, Kane.
