Texas A&M football: Mike Elko talks ahead of Las Vegas Bowl

Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko discusses how he looks to build a championship program ahead of taking on the USC Trojans in the Las Vegas Bowl.

The 2024 college football bowl season continues to gift fans with rare matchups.

One such game will feature Texas A&M football (8-4) taking on USC (6-6) in the Las Vegas Bowl on Friday. This will be the fourth-ever meeting between the programs, and the first since 1977.

Following a 7-1 start to the season and a chance to compete for the 12-team College Football Playoff, Texas A&M ended the season with three losses in four games. That includes a 17-7 loss at the hands of rival Texas, eliminating the Aggies from CFP contention.

On the other sideline, third-year USC coach Lincoln Riley will look to get the Trojans to finish with a record over .500. After a pair of wins over Nebraska and UCLA to gain bowl eligibility, USC fell 49-35 to Notre Dame to conclude the regular season.

USC is 1-0 vs. SEC teams this season after picking up a 27-20 win over LSU in the season opener. Texas A&M has not played a Big Ten opponent since beating Northwestern 33-22 on Dec. 31, 2011, in the Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas in Houston.

Friday's matchup will be the fourth-ever meeting between Texas A&M and USC on the gridiron. The Trojans are a perfect 3-0 vs. the Aggies heading into Friday's game, including two bowl victories.

The Aggies and Trojans' first-ever matchup occurred at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Los Angeles on Oct. 10, 1964. USC bounced back from a 17-7 loss to Michigan State the week before beating a winless Texas A&M team that finished the 1964 season 1-6.

Since then, the teams have squared off twice in bowl games. The Trojans earned a 20-0 win in the Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tennessee, on Dec. 22, 1975. In the most recent meeting, USC defeated Texas A&M 47-28 in the Bluebonnet Bowl in Houston.

Here's a look at the football games played between the Aggies and the Trojans:

  • Oct. 10, 1964 (Los Angeles): USC 31, Texas A&M 7
