Why is it so late?

Because the NFL expanded its regular season to 17 games across an 18-week schedule, the Super Bowl will be held on the second Sunday in February this year. This is the first time since 2003 that the Super Bowl has not been held on the first Sunday in February.

It is also the latest that a Super Bowl has ever been held. The previous record was February 7, which was the day Super Bowls 44, 50 and 55 were held. Under the NFL’s new format, the latest date on which a Super Bowl can occur is Feb. 14.
