NYC Starbucks employees join nation-wide strike 'Red Cup Rebellion'

Starbucks workers around the country are calling the strike the "Red Cup Rebellion," claiming that understaffed stores and inconsistent scheduling is contributing to stale working conditions.

Today's strike takes place on the same day as the corporation's Red Cup Day, when customers flock to the coffee houses to get their hands on reusable Starbucks cups with their purchases. The strikers in Brooklyn represent the nearly 7,000 workers around the country from Starbucks Workers United, a union formed earlier this year after tensions boiled over in the past.

Today’s strikers want a bargaining session with the Starbucks company as soon as possible. If they don't get one, they say the company will be in even more hot water as they organize more workers to strike in the future.

Employees voiced their frustrations to management and even helped educate customers. While some customers were glad to take their business elsewhere, others couldn't resist the cup of Joe.

Starbucks released a statement to News 12 saying, "We remain committed to all partners and will continue to work together, side-by-side, to make Starbucks a company that works for everyone. We have been willing and continue to urge the union to meet us at the bargaining table to move the process forward in good faith."
