Dozens Of Service Dogs Were Left Behind In Afghanistan
If there is anything that gets me emotional it’s dogs and anything negative happening to them. When I first saw these tweets last night about service dogs being left behind in Afghanistan I couldn’t believe it. I looked for someone to fact-check it and say it wasn’t true. But I just kept finding confirmation and more sources reporting the same devastating news. Many people, and understandably, were horrified at the way our exit from the war-torn country was handled. I feel terrible for everyone involved as it is an all-around challenging situation. We saw American citizens and Afghan allies left behind and trapped under the Taliban’s rule. A statement from American Humane alleges that the U.S. military abandoned its contracted working dogs.
They described this as an effective “death sentence” to the animals as a result of the U.S. withdrawal from Kabul. According to the statement:
“These brave dogs do the same dangerous, lifesaving work as our military working dogs, and deserved a far better fate than the one to which they have been condemned,” said Robin R. Ganzert, American Humane’s president and CEO.“It sickens us to sit idly by and watch these brave dogs who valiantly served our country be put to death or worse.”
The organization, American Humane, has rescued service animals since World War offered to “help transport these contract K-9 soldiers to U.S. soil” and “provide for their lifetime medical care.”
