Four-year starter enters backup competition

GREEN BAY – With Jordan Love taking over as the Packers' starting quarterback, his top backup isn't yet known.

Penn State's Sean Clifford just entered the competition.

The Packers selected Clifford with the first of their two fifth-round picks on Saturday, at No. 149 overall. The only other QB on Green Bay's roster currently is Danny Etling.

Clifford started for four years at Penn State (2019-22), earning honorable mention All-Big Ten three times. He was a team captain all four years as well, starting 46 games in all.

He did split time in 2020 with QB Will Levis, who eventually transferred to Kentucky and was drafted at the top of the second round by the Tennessee Titans.

In his college career, Clifford threw for 10,661 yards with 86 TDs and 31 interceptions. He was 833-of-1,356. As a runner, he added more than 1,000 yards and 15 rushing TDs.

He set Penn State school records in passing yards and passing TDs as well as victories with 32. He was also the Rose Bowl offensive MVP in the Nittany Lions' win over Utah, completing 16-of-21 passes for 279 yards and two TDs.
