Scotland v Hungary LIVE: Score and updates from crunch Euro ...
Hungary snatched a 100th-minute winner to beat Scotland 1-0 and put themselves in contention for a last-16 spot at Euro 2024 while condemning the Scots to yet another failure at a major tournament in a match that also saw Barnabas Varga stretchered off following a horror collision.
Kevin Csoboth’s breakaway goal with the last kick of the match ensured Hungary finished third in Group A with three points while Scotland crashed out at the bottom of the table and are still to get through to the knockout phase of either the Euros or World Cup in their history.
Hungary must now wait to see whether they will qualify for the last 16 as one of the best third-placed finishers, depending on results from the other groups.
Before the late drama, Hungary striker Varga endured a scary moment as he horrifically collided with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn and defender Anthony Ralston. Varga appeared to be out cold and was treated on the pitch behind a blanket curtain before being stretchered off but was later reported to be stable in a Stuttgart hospital, needing cheek surgery.

Scotland find a new way to suffer the same old heartbreak as Euro 2024 defeat leaves questions
22:51 , Karl Matchett
Why always Scotland? Why always like this? The same, crushing feeling – a hundred times over – brings the Tartan Army’s party at Euro 2024 crashing to a halt. With the last kick of the game and in the 100th minute, Kevin Csoboth may have sent Hungary through to the last 16. In the far corner, Hungary certainly celebrated like they are in the next round. At the other end, as defeated heroes fell to the turf, Scotland didn’t need to be told they were going home.
And so, a 12th appearance at a major tournament ended with a 12th elimination at the group stage for Scotland. But that does not tell the story of this campaign, of this night. Has a Scotland side ever got so close to making history on this stage? And how did Scotland not get a penalty, for the chance to send themselves through?

More heartbreak for Scotland at major international tournaments. It’s 12 World Cups and Euros now where they have qualified and been in the group stage - but gone no further.
Their last match won at a European Championship or World Cup remains in 1996.

Scotland keeper Angus Gunn:
“The goal at the end was because we were going for it but the performance showed the fans what it means to us.
“When we do look back, we created chances and had opportunities - it didn’t fall for us, deflections didn’t go our way. We’re out and nothing really matters anymore.
“It was a bit painful but hopefully the guy [Varga] is alright. I can’t remember too much about it.”

A positive update here from Hungary’s official Twitter (or X, should we say) account:
“Barnabas Varga’s condition is stable! The player [...] is currently in one of the hospitals in Stuttgart! We will inform you immediately if there is any news about [his]status!”
Varga was down for nearly ten minutes before being stretchered away.

The best...or the worst, depending on your perspective... of that last-minute action which settled the match and Scotland’s Euro 2024 fate. Elation and desperation.

Scotland captain Andy Robertson speaking after the match:
“We knew we had to win, both teams had to and they’ve hit us on the counter-attack. It’ll take a long time to get over this one. That’s football.
“We had a lot of possession first half without really doing anything with it but we were controlling the game. We had to find that cutting edge and we knew there’d come a time we could go for it that bit more but we got sucker-punched at the end.
“We have to hope for the future but that’s not for tonight. It’s a tough one, with international football you lose players sometimes, we’ll see what happens with that. The lads are absolutely gutted. What I will say is thank you to the country because we felt the excitement back home and sorry for letting you down.”

“There was a lack of quality, particularly in forward positions where it matters most. You never thought they were going to score - yet it was a terrible decision with the Scotland penalty.”

Scotland players applaud their fans and they are out on their feet. They had a go very, very late on, they went close once through Hanley near the end, but there must be regrets from how little they attacked in that game.

Hungary striker Barnabas Varga stretchered off in scary Euro 2024 moment after horror collision
22:02 , Karl Matchett
Hungary striker Barnabas Varga was stretchered off during his side’s crunch clash with Scotland after a horrific collision in a scary moment at Euro 2024.
With the score at 0-0 in the 68th minute of the Group A clash, that both sides needed to win to keep their realistic hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive, Varga, Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn and defender Anthony Ralston all collided while competing for a ball in the air.

One final launched ball for Scotland but that’s it - the whistle goes, Hungary get the late win and Scotland are out of Euro 2024!
GOAL! 90+10’ - Scotland 0-1 Hungary
21:59 , Karl Matchett
...and that is heartbreak for Scotland, absolute scenes for Hungary! A super-rapid counter down the right sees Szoboszlai play out from the edge of the box, he finds Csoboth, his pass goes to Sallai, he cuts it back just past Szoboszlai but straight back to Csoboth and he side-foots home the winner! After 110 minutes!
90+10’ - Scotland 0-0 Hungary
21:57 , Karl Matchett
Shankland with another brilliant cross from the right and Hanley heads back across goal - knocked behind for a corner. The corner falls for McGregor but it’s blocked and Hungary counter at pace...
90+9’ - Scotland 0-0 Hungary
21:56 , Karl Matchett
Great play from Shankland initially and he finds Morgan in the box but there’s a bit of hesitation and he can’t find room for a shot or pass. It’s eventually out and crossed from the left, the chest down falls to Hanley - THAT’S the chance Scotland wanted, but NOT to the player they would have dreamed of. Hanley’s shot is cool, but comfortably parried out by Gulacsi.
90+7’ - Scotland 0-0 Hungary
21:54 , Karl Matchett
Scotland trying to whack it forward now and just hoping it falls to someone. Hungary’s counters are a little more numerous, an little more dangerous and certainly they’ve gone closer with two efforts against the woodwork. But will either team find a way through?
It’s full time in the other game - Germany win the group after that late 1-1 draw.
On we go in Stuttgart and a ball down the right finds Christie crossing to McTominay - and he pokes over the bar! Then the offside flag goes up anyway. Three minutes to go.
90+4’ - Scotland 0-0 Hungary
21:52 , Karl Matchett
McGregor finally takes a shot - a rifled effort which is blocked. The next cross is aimed to Shankland but it’s overhit and he can’t keep it in play.
A VERY late goal in the other game - Fullkrug has headed in his second of the tournament, Germany 1-1 Switzerland, the hosts back to the top of Group A!
90’ - Scotland 0-0 Hungary
21:50 , Karl Matchett
We have hit the 90 mark. Scotland have still had precisely one shot all match long. This is dreadful stuff - forget any notion that substitutions and a shift in formation from Steve Clarke late in this game is “going for it” - they simply haven’t got anywhere close to having a go, let alone getting the goal they need.
TEN minutes added on.
Hungary start it with two shots on goal, the second by Szoboszlai which is well-saved by Gunn - then Csoboth shots across the face of goal and strikes the post!
88’ - Scotland 0-0 Hungary
21:46 , Karl Matchett
Switzerland have had another goal chalked off - this one a comfortable offside decision. They still lead 1-0 and are still topping the group as it stands.
Csoboth and Nagy on in another pair of Hungary changes. Hanley gets a bit of treatment for a cut on his head. We’re going to surely be approaching ten minutes added on when we hit the 90 mark.
Lewis Morgan comes on for Robertson.
84’ - Scotland 0-0 Hungary
21:41 , Karl Matchett
Gilmour feeds Shankland through the right channel and his snapshot is spilled by Gulacsi, but the offside flag goes up.
Double sub with seven to play of the 90: McLean and Christie for Ralston and Gilmour.
Scotland finally go to a four at the back. Not exactly going for broke but they simply have to get bodies forward and balls into the final third now. Hungary do too, but they look still content to swing over wide crosses.
80’ - Scotland 0-0 Hungary
21:38 , Karl Matchett
Scotland furious - they want a penalty, referee says absolutely not.
A through pass set Armstrong behind the defender and there was a tangle of legs, both of them going to ground, but no foul says the Argentinian official.
Kleinheisler has been booked somewhere along the way for Hungary - he’s sub so maybe for the anger towards the officials or medics during that previous incident.
On a replay, it looks somewhat like a foul on Armstrong but it’s not clear and no VAR investigation to say otherwise.
76’ - Scotland 0-0 Hungary
21:34 , Karl Matchett
Szoboszlai jinks past a couple of tackles in the box and crosses but Scotland get a free-kick for handball.
McGinn off, Armstrong on. And Shankland for Adams - probably 20 minutes or so for the goalscorer to make an impact.
Can they now react and finally be a bit more adventurous? They must score, simple as that. Scotland have just won their first corner of the match.
74’ - Scotland 0-0 Hungary
21:33 , Karl Matchett
That was a lengthy stoppage but we’re hopeful over Varga - he was stretchered away, still with the blankets around him but there was no sense of urgency precisely as they departed.
In the midst of that there was a VAR check for a possible penalty but not given in the end. Stoppage must have been about seven or eight minutes in the end.
Double sub for Hungary at the end of it - Varga and Dardai off, Adam and Szalai on.
70’ - Scotland 0-0 Hungary
21:28 , Karl Matchett
Vargas was put straight into the recovery position by some of his teammates and there is a real anger towards the medical staff who were extremely slow coming on, first for the initial treatment and then a second group with a stretcher. One of the players eventually sprints towards them and races back with it in his hands himself.
It’s hard to know what’s going on there as the medics have put a cloth barrier around Vargas while they attend to him.
68’ - Scotland 0-0 Hungary
21:26 , Karl Matchett
Another Szoboszlai ball into the box sees Gunn come flying out and he clatters through at least two people - Vargas and Ralston are both down, the Hungarian man needing quite severe attention by the looks of things.
Gunn also needing medical treatment.
64’ - Scotland 0-0 Hungary
21:22 , Karl Matchett
Nagy on for Styles in Hungary’s first substitution.
Another corner from Szoboszlai, this one which goes deep; Bolla crosses to the middle and Dardai is there to head at goal...it bounces off his arm, off a defender’s head and over. Ref doesn’t spot it and a goal-kick is given.
Moments later Szoboszlai is lining up a shot from range and Robertson speeds across to tackle his club teammate.
60’ - Scotland 0-0 Hungary
21:17 , Karl Matchett
Finally McGinn grabs hold of the game and looks to make something happen. He just barrels through two tackles down the right wing, cuts infield on the byline and could shoot form a narrow angle - but instead tries to pull it back towards McTominay who is on his heels and the defender is able to clear.
Something for the Scots fans to roar at, at least.
We’ve played an hour; they’ve had one shot. Scotland’s cumulative xG in a game they must win is 0.03.
56’ - Scotland 0-0 Hungary
21:15 , Karl Matchett
Szoboszlai rampages forward and spreads play left, with Sallai eventually shooting and striking Ralston’s arm - but it’s by his side and that’s never a penalty. Another corner for Hungary though.
This time the delivery is to the near post and Scotland deal with it well enough.
Who will blink first here? They can’t keep cautious for the whole 90 minutes, of course they don’t want to leave gaps at the back but so far neither look capable of scoring in the current set-ups.
52’ - Scotland 0-0 Hungary
21:11 , Karl Matchett
A word with Hungarian boss Rossi now by the ref, who is stern indeed in his manner tonight.
Scotland unable to really get into the final third with any numbers just yet - how long will Clarke give it before he thinks about subs?
Robertson sets Adams away down the left and the striker cuts it to shoot high and wild - that’s at least their first shot of the game.
A reminder Germany trail to Switzerland in the other game - Sommer has been forced into an early save by Musiala as the hosts look to step up matters.
48’ - Scotland 0-0 Hungary
21:08 , Karl Matchett
Sallai turns and shoots on the spin, but doesn’t make great connection - it’s a routine save for Gunn. Hungary have come out quicker and more adventurous looking first in this half.
McTominay thinks he’s won the ball on the edge of the Hungary box but the ref disagrees and it’s not just a foul, it’s a card - he’ll be suspended for the last 16 if Scotland do go through.
46' - Scotland 0-0 Hungary
21:03 , Karl Matchett
Right - we’re back underway and no subs for either side. Goalless so far, a draw no good for either team. Both have to go for it, let’s hope the quality and the tempo picks up significantly.
HT - Scotland 0-0 Hungary

Images from the end of the first half - that booking for Schafer and Orban’s close call, hitting the bar.
HT - Switzerland 1-0 Germany

The hosts behind at the break after Ndoye’s opener. Andrich’s strike was ruled out earlier on.
As it stands, Switzerland are top of Group A, Germany second. Scotland are third but with only two points, which is very unlikely to be enough.
Germany looking a touch anxious. Getting a lot of those little passes wrong, or snatching at shots

HT - Scotland 0-0 Hungary
20:48 , Karl Matchett
Szoboszlai lashes a left-footed shot goalward with the final act of the half but it’s rising and over. And that’s the whistle, half the game over and done with. Half Scotland’s chance to make the last 16 gone.
No real threat from them despite lots of early possession; Hungary have had the odd opening through set pieces but with both teams needing to win it remains Scotland 0-0 Hungary.
45’ - Scotland 0-0 Hungary
20:46 , Karl Matchett
Schafer and Hendry both go clattering into a tackle in the middle of the pitch...the Scot wins the ball and the Hungarian earns himself a yellow card - on the replay that’s a pretty cowardly stamp rather than an attempted tackle and the ref has done very well to see that. Third booking for the Magyars tonight.
McKenna rises to try and head goalward from a dinked cross but it’s off his shoulder and easy for Gulacsi.
One minute added on.
42’ - Scotland 0-0 Hungary
20:44 , Karl Matchett
Orban HAS to score! Szoboszlai dinks his free-kick over the wall and the defence and Orban has run behind - he nods past Gunn from just four or five yards out but it clips the crossbar and bounces over!
Massive chance, best of the game so far for either nation.
Into the final few minutes before the break.
40’ - Scotland 0-0 Hungary
20:41 , Karl Matchett
The bagpipes are back out in the stands as the fans attempt to urge Scotland back upfield once more.
Good work between Ralston and Adams but the cross doesn’t sit nicely for McTominay to get a shot in on goal and in the end McGinn’s second cross fades through to the keeper. Adams gives another free-kick away at the other end for a high boot.
Celebrations for Switzerland. All rather attritional between Scotland and Hungary so far.
36’ - Scotland 0-0 Hungary
20:35 , Karl Matchett
The last five or ten minutes have definitely swung - more possession from Hungary, more set-piece deliveries from them and most of the game being played in Scotland’s half of the pitch.
Nothing too dramatic yet for Gunn to deal with - Sallai whacks one from range over the bar as if to emphasise that point.
Scotland looking a little uncomfortable now.
32’ - Scotland 0-0 Hungary
20:33 , Karl Matchett
It’s central, it’s fairly far out, but it’s definitely in Szoboszlai territory - silly free-kick to give away by Scotland.
The Hungary captain lines it up, alters the ball...and curls it into the wall and over the bar. Good defensive work by McKenna, by the looks of things.
Szoboszlai goes over to take the corner as well and it’s Hanley this time who rises to head clear.
GOAL - Switzerland 1-0 Germany
20:31 , Karl Matchett
Goal alert: Switzerland 1-0 Germany - and this one will count! A low cross from the left sees Ndoye race in at the near post and he’s just about onside to rattle home past Neuer. Switzerland top as it stands.
28’ - Scotland 0-0 Hungary
20:29 , Karl Matchett
A second yellow card for Hungary, this time it’s Willi Orban who clattered through his man.
Another set piece is poor, this time Gilmour’s, and Hungary’s quick counter ends in a corner, Ralston deflecting Kerkez’s cross behind. Takes a couple of attempts but Scotland clear it.
24’ - Scotland 0-0 Hungary
20:25 , Karl Matchett
Kerkez hauls down McGinn after a poor attempted clearance and it’s a free-kick, right channel again. Decent chance for a more dangerous delivery this time and the captain stands over it - Robertson’s ball is cleared by the first man. Poor effort.
Not too much yet from McTominay, in or outside the box. Scotland really want to get him more involved, either in the build-up play or just pushing forward along and beyond Adams.
20’ - Scotland 0-0 Hungary
20:21 , Karl Matchett
Bolla makes a smart run behind the defence but McKenna recovers well to cut out the pass and halt the danger. Scotland not yet really able to threaten Gulacsi; Hungary have mostly been without the ball in this first 20 minutes but they have had one or two moments on the break or with that earlier long shot.
All very cagey and tense, as you’d expect. Good play by Gilmour initially and then by McGinn, both in the right channel, but the latter’s eventual cross is overhit and out.
16’ - Scotland 0-0 Hungary
20:19 , Karl Matchett
Goal in the other game - Germany lead Switzerland thanks to a first international goal by Robert Andrich. Except..it’s not. Ruled out after a VAR check for a foul by Musiala before Andrich took the shot, which was a rasper from range. Still 0-0 then!
Meanwhile Styles has gone through the back of McGregor and the Hungarian is immediately booked.
12’ - Scotland 0-0 Hungary
20:14 , Karl Matchett
Decent early ball retention from the Scots, not really overcommitting numbers forward but gently progressing while keeping the door locked at the same time.
A decision goes against Hendry and he reacts angrily - the ref is having none of that and bellows at him to come and have a word.
Tonight’s official is Facundo Tello, an Argentinian. Why? Read on to find out...

What do you get when you combine a stag do in Shoreditch, a veteran Aberdeen defender in drag, and a 1970s disco hit by the Spanish duo Baccara? The answer is the sound of another summer of international football, and the unlikely anthem of the Tartan Army’s adventures at Euro 2024 in Germany.
How a forgotten 70s disco hit became Scotland’s unofficial anthem
8’ - Scotland 0-0 Hungary
20:09 , Karl Matchett
Dardai clatters into McTominay and Scotland have won a succession of early challenges and set pieces. One such delivery is nodded on toward Adams - it needs a good defensive interception to stop the chance on goal. Then it’s a quick break and a long-range shot from Sallai, which bounces in front of Gunn and forces him into an awkward save!
4’ - Scotland 0-0 Hungary
20:05 , Karl Matchett
We’ll be keeping you posted on updates from the Switzerland vs Germany game of course, but our primary focus is this one - this is the one which matters.
It’s ferocious and fierce in midfield already, both sides throwing in some big tackles and keeping each other honest. Promising possession for Scotland in the opening stages, Gilmour getting on the ball plenty.
1’ - Scotland 0-0 Hungary

AND WE ARE GO!
Two Liverpool players contest the toss, Andy Robertson and Dominik Szoboszlai the captains of their respective nations.
Hungary get us underway and...errr, the referee calls it back. False start, he’s unhappy too many were in the opposition half. Give it a rest! Back underway once more.
