Rick and Morty Season 4 Creators Say You Can Watch New Episodes Without ReWatching Previous Seasons
The 'Rick and Morty' Season 4 creators, Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland, share what they think about watching new episodes upon release on Nov. 10.

Rick and Morty Season 4 returns tonight, baby. The Adult Swim series starts airing new episodes on Sunday, Nov. 10, at 11:30 p.m. ET. And of course, after a long two-year wait, fans are dying to get their hands on the big release. But for those of you who are new to the craze and weren’t able to join in time before the premiere, don’t fret. According to the Rick and Morty Season 4 creators, Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland, you can still watch new episodes without catching up with seasons 1-3.

What creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland say about watching ‘Rick and Morty’ Season 4

Back in July 2019, Harmon and Roiland spoke with Entertainment Weekly to discuss the future of Rick and Morty Season 4. Midway through the interview, the show creators were asked if fans should rewatch specific episodes prior to the new season.

“I would definitely say watch all of season 3 before season 4,” Roiland said.

But it looks like Harmon and Roiland were simply trying to dodge the question. On Nov. 10, Entertainment Tonight Canada dropped an interview with the creators. However, both are now saying viewers can watch Rick and Morty Season 4 even without seeing previous seasons.

“Strangely enough, this is sort of a decent season for you to watch with your friend who has never seen the show. We don’t think they’ll be lost,” Harmon told ET Canada.

“For the most part it’s actually a really good point of entry for new fans,” Roiland added. “If you’ve never seen the show, season four would be a really good point of entry because the episodes are very standalone, in a good way. “

Nevertheless, longtime Rick and Morty fans can still look forward to references from seasons 1-3. But it’s likely to be less relevant to the overarching plot.

“There’ll be familiar things to reward the old viewer,” Harmon said. “But in a lot of ways it’s starting fresh, there was no giant cliffhanger at the end of the last season that needed to be paid off in the first episode… I think you can just jump on in, and maybe it’ll inspire a binge of what you missed later.”

Will Kanye West join the ‘Rick and Morty’ Season 4 cast as a guest star?

Still speaking with ET Canada, the Rick and Morty creators teased the fourth season’s guest stars, which includes Paul Giamatti, Sam Neill, Taika Waititi and Kathleen Turner — just to name a few. And one big name viewers have been dying to see as a guest star is Kanye West. However, fans might not want to hold their breath for West’s cameo in Rick and Morty Season 4.

According to ET Canada, Roiland revealed the collaboration episode with West is in the works, as the creators have met with the music artist. But no one knows when the episode will happen.

“There’s not a clock on it,” Roiland said. “We’ve hung with him, we’ve chatted, we’ve brainstormed… I don’t know when that will materialize, if it will materialize, but I know if it does it will be amazing.”

That said, it seems the Rick and Morty team have an idea of what will happen in the episode.

“I think that we all kind of agreed that it would need to be a very special episode and would have music production as a heavy element central to it,” Harmon said. “Nobody on either side would want that not to be controlled by Kanye.”

How Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland feel about 70 more new episodes of ‘Rick and Morty’

Although West may not appear in Rick and Morty Season 4 — or at least the first half of it — Harmon and Roiland have plenty of episodes left to feature the collaboration. Following the third season, Adult Swim renewed Rick and Morty for 70 new episodes. And it seems both creators are excited about all of their upcoming adventures.

“I think it’s liberating because we have so many ideas and they kind of bleed across seasons,” Roiland said of the 70-episode pickup order. “But ifyou think about it from a macro perspective, it can be like, ‘Holy crap, we’re going to be doing this for a long time.'”

“It meant that Justin and I could stop focusing on multiple projects and focus more on Rick and Morty alone,” Harmon said. “It means that now, more than ever, we’re truly free.”

Even if you aren’t well-acquainted with every wild adventure on Rick and Morty, Roiland and Harmon promise you’ll still enjoy the ride in the new season. So here’s to season 4 and to the 60 episodes afterward. Let’s hope it’s a good one.
