The Cincinnati Open tennis tournament returns to Mason Aug. 11-19. Here's everything to know.
The Cincinnati Open, formerly called the Western & Southern Open, is celebrating its 125th anniversary and 45th year in Mason, Ohio as the tournament heats up on Monday.
Monday's schedule includes the final round of qualifying play as eight ATP and WTA players will earn a place in the main draw.
There will be six ATP main draw matches (two singles, four doubles) during Monday's night session, highlighted by American Tommy Paul (World No. 13), who is fresh off a Bronze Medal at the Paris Olympics. There are 116 Cincinnati Open participants who competed in the Paris Olympics, including 20 total medal winners and three Opening Ceremony flag bearers.
Monday's evening session also features 2024 NCAA doubles champions Robert Cash and JJ Tracy from Ohio State taking on Wimbledon finalists Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson.
Tickets for Monday night's session are still available here.
WTA, ATP scores Monday at the Cincinnati Open
Just as she did in her run to the Cincinnati Open Round of 32 in 2019, China's Yafan Wang has played her way out of qualifying and into the main draw after beating Russia's Erika Andreeva in a three-set marathon match, 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-3, that took nearly three hours.
It took one Center Court match in the ATP main draw for there to be a big-time upset. Italy's Flavio Cobolli knocked out American Tommy Paul, the World No. 13., who had recently reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon and the Olympics last month.
Last month, Robin Montgomery broke through at Wimbledon at a qualifier, reaching the Round of 64. The 19-year-old American did it again on Monday, taking out Italy's Martina Trevisan 6-4, 6-4 to get to the main draw.
No. 12 seed Taylor Townsend played her way into the main draw with a dominant 6-0, 6-3 victory over fellow American Katie Volynets Monday afternoon. Townsend, a Wimbledon doubles champion earlier this year, won a doubles title at the Cincinnati Open in 2023 with partner Alycia Parks.
Spain's Jaume Munar is through to the main draw after upsetting No. 6 seed Lorenzo Sonego of Italy, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. American Aleksander Kovacevic also secured a spot in the main draw with a straight-set victory over Australian Rinky Hijikata.
American Alex Michelsen and Portugal's Nuno Borges made quick work of their qualifying opponents Monday to advance to the main draw. Borges, one day after knocking out Cincinnati native J.J. Wolf, defeated Aleksander Vukic 7-6 (4), 6-1. Michelsen took out wild card Mackenzie McDonald in straight sets.
Coming off a run to the Wimbledon quarterfinals as a qualifier, Lulu Sun (No. 53) of New Zealand advanced to the Cincinnati Open main draw with a 7-6 (4), 6-3 win over Italy's Lucia Bronzetti.
Naomi Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion and former World No. 1, fell to American Ashlyn Krueger 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. Krueger is making her first appearance in Cincinnati.
Coming off maternity leave in 2023, Osaka was playing in the qualifying rounds of a WTA Tournament for the first time since 2018.
Brandon Holt will play in an ATP main draw for the first time since February. The 26-year-old from California defeated fellow American Zachary Svajda 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 Monday to advance to the Round of 64.
Elsewhere on the ATP side, Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka beat Arthur Cazaux (France) 6-4, 6-4 and France's Corentin Moutet advanced to the main draw with a three-set win over Hungary's Marton Fucsovics.
Poland's Magdalena Frech did not drop a set over the last two days of qualifying play and became the first qualifier to secure a spot in the main draw Monday with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro on Court 10.
Frech, WTA No. 50, has shown the ability to get hot at the right time this year, making the Round of 16 in Dubai and the Australian Open.
Frech, France's Varvara Gracheva and Great Britain's Harriet Dart each advanced to the main draw with wins on Monday.
