WandaVision: Monica Rambeau Finally Gains Powers | CBR

As early as her appearance in Captain Marvel, fans hoped Monica Rambeau would go on to be the hero they knew from the comics. Whether she would inherit her mother's call sign of "Photon," claim the Captain Marvel title from Carol Danvers or become a hero with her own name, it was clear one way or another she'd end up with powers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, WandaVision has begun to push Monica closer than ever to that destiny, and in its latest episode, she may have arrived.

After her previous interactions with the paranormal hex she was brought in to investigate, Darcy warned Monica previously that further interaction with the anomaly could radically alter her molecular structure. Determined in spite of the risks to help out Wanda and the people of Westview, Monica strode forward with an expensive piece of extraterrestrial equipment to help her reenter Westview. The specially constructed vehicle was meant to withstand the molecular restructuring of the hex, but it ate the behemoth up and spit it out with Monica barely escaping. Rather than give up, though, she opted to travel in alone.

Pushing through layers of memories, with the words of her mother echoing alongside those of Nick Fury telling her she would need to "learn to glow like your Auntie Carol," Monica pushed through to the other side where her powers seemed to manifest for the first time. Her eyes glowing a mystical blue, she looked around seemingly perceiving a wider array of the electromagnetic spectrum, watching what should have been invisible electricity coursing through power lines ahead of her.

Monica shook off the moment, but it would not be her only showing of power in the episode. Confronting Wanda personally, Monica quickly found herself a target yet again of the hero's telekinetic rage, but this time, when Wanda went to slam her down, Monica padded her landed with a glow all her own. The impact rippled up Monica's arms in shining blue and she stood up prepared to force Wanda to confront the truth.

In the comics, Monica's powers revolve around manipulating energy and converting her body into light particles. Known by many names over the years, under any identity, she can fly at light speed, fire blasts of energy, phase through solid matter and just like in the show, perceive the entire electromagnetic spectrum. The show even pays homage to Monica's superheroic costumes, featuring a S.W.O.R.D. shirt that bears a striking resemblance to her costume in the comics.

Though much of the fun in WandaVision results from the mystery and intrigue, it's amazing to see the MCU can weave in yet another superhero origin using the high-quality storytelling fans have grown to expect. Monica may not be glowing quite like Auntie Carol just yet, but at this rate, she'll be zipping through space taking down alien fleets in no time.
