MIAMI -- The Phillies shored up their pitching staff before Tuesday’s 6 p.m. ET Trade Deadline when they acquired Michael Lorenzen from the Tigers in exchange for prospect Hao-Yu Lee.
Lorenzen, 31, is 5-7 with a 3.58 ERA in 18 starts this season with the Tigers, making his first AL All-Star team. He has spent the past two seasons as a starter, but he spent the majority of 2016-21 pitching out of the bullpen.
He could do both for the Phillies, if needed.

Philadelphia has been looking for pitching depth leading up to the Trade Deadline, both in the rotation and the bullpen. In the rotation, Cristopher Sánchez has stepped up as an effective No. 5 starter, but the Phillies do not have much depth behind him in the system. In the bullpen, they have leaned heavily on closer Craig Kimbrel, left-hander Gregory Soto and others, while José Alvarado has been on the IL twice and right-hander Seranthony Domínguez has not been as effective of late.
Lee, 20, was the Phillies’ No. 5 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. He was batting .283 with five home runs, 26 RBIs and a .773 OPS with High-A Jersey Shore.
