3:33 p.m. Your weekly gameday A.D. Mitchell updateWide receiver A.D. Mitchell, whose battled an ankle injury for most of the season, has bounce in his step after not playing since the Auburn game (unless you consider on the field before a timeout last week). He's warming up and just did a quick stop and turn on a route and did a stiff arm on air as he glided down field with the ball. Outside linebacker Marvin Jones Jr. is in a walking boot and remains out.
3:27 p.m. Back from the fieldJust back from some time on the field pregame. Yes, Darnell Washington looks even bigger when you are a few feet away from him. A.J. Green and Rodrigo Blankenship are on the sidelines. Saw Peyton and Eli Manning on the SEC Network set. Much earlier saw Jayden Daniels dressed out and throwing passes. Didn't see him do much running yet.
2:37 p.m. Georgia's Todd Monken catches up with LSU's Brian KellyGeorgia offensive coordinator Todd Monken and LSU coach Brian Kelly are catching up on the field for a good while.
Monken was a graduate assistant at Grand Valley State in 1989-90 when Kelly was defensive coordinator at the Michigan school.
"Wherever he's been he's been successful," Kelly said. "He's got a great offensive mind. He comes from a family that's been involved in football, the entire family. He just knows the game, whether he's been in college as a head coach in Southern Mississippi, working in the NFL. He knows the game. He relates well to his players. Outstanding play-caller."
2:17 p.m. Cortez Hankton in different stripes for Georgia-LSULSU coach Brian Kelly added a couple of guys from Georgia’s staff last winter.
Wide receivers coach Cortez Hankton is serving in the same capacity for the Tigers. So is analyst John Jancek.
“I wish nothing but the best for Coach Hank,” wide receiver Ladd McConkey said. “He was always a great guy, a great leader for us. He did so much for me. I was thankful for him and that opportunity he got. No hard feelings. He can do what he needs to do. I’m supporting him all the way.”
Hankton coached at Georgia from 2018-2021, but the New Orleans native made a return to his home state.
“I know he does a great job with those receivers,” safety Chris Smith said. “They’re going to come ready to play.”
Kelly said that Hankton will be a “great asset,” as a recruiting period gets cranked up.
“He's intimately involved in what we do in the passing game,” Kelly said. “I think he's done a really good job with implementing that into what we do on a day-to-day basis, as well as developing relationships with our current players and in recruiting.
1:52 p.m. Georgia Bulldogs Kirby Smart and LSU Tiger Brian Kelly meet againKirby Smart is 0-2 against LSU as a head coach, but he’s 2-0 against Brian Kelly.
Georgia beat Notre Dame 20-19 in 2017 in South Bend and 23-17 in Athens in 2019.
“I think they were great matchups,” Smart said. “They were national exposure games. …Both hard-fought, physical football games in both cases.”
Kelly expects to see some similar traits from this Georgia team that those other Bulldog squads had.
“We're going to play a physical football team that has the style of its head coach,” Kelly said. “They're going to play great defense. They're going to be physical on both sides of the ball. That's the nature of a well-coached football team that's won a national championship and is competing for another. You know what you're going to get here. I mean, everything's going to come very difficult. Nothing's going to be easy. You're going to have to earn everything.”
1:29 p.m. Jayden Daniels appears ready to go but will he be same threat?LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels appears set to play a week after sustaining an ankle injury, but will he be the same mobile threat as usual?
“Look, there’s a difference between being hurt and being injured,” LSU coach Brian Kelly told the SEC Network on Friday. “If he’s injured, you can’t play in this game. That Georgia defense is too good and Garrett Nussmeier, our No. 2 quarterback, is that good. We would put Garrett in there if we had a competitive disadvantage. He’s ready to play. He’ll be able to start and we’re excited about watching him play.”
CBS’ Gary Danielson, in comments sent to reporters by the network said this of the LSU offense: “I think we’re going to see more of the boot game, the quick passing game, the screen game, a few long shots – and that’s dangerous because they’re not used to playing that way – but they’re not going to be able to grind it out against Georgia.”
1:04 pm. Home away from home for Georgia BulldogsGeorgia started this season at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. It could be playing here at the end of this month in the Peach Bowl in a semifinal game,
“We always treat Atlanta like it’s our back yard, like we’re down the road at Sanford,” nose guard Zion Logue said. “We do treat it like it’s a home field advantage. Going off of playing Oregon earlier this year and all the countless times we played there in the past. We just try to use it for our advantage.”
Smart, ever the coach with his focus on the task ahead, said “there's no thought of the next step. There's such a long break between this step and next step. This is the culmination of a season. The next opportunity, we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.”
Georgia has practiced mostly inside their own indoor facility this week to get ready for today.
“Theirs is a little bit newer model of it there at the Mercedes,” Smart said. “Very similar to ours. We've practiced. We've had some weather, so we've been inside and out each day, but mostly inside.”
