US Open title favourite Nick Kyrgios is aiming to win his first major but faces an obstacle in Russia's Karen Khachanov in the quarter-finals on Tuesday (Wednesday AEST).

By seedings, the duo are evenly matched with Kyrgios (23rd) slightly ahead of Khachanov (27th) after his success in ATP Tour events in 2022.

But the Australian is missing the rankings points from his run to the Wimbledon final and will go into the match as a hot favourite.

Fourth set - Kyrgios leads tiebreak 5-1: Kyrgios has been brilliant in this tiebreak. He has stepped up when it matters.

Fourth set - Kyrgios holds 2-2: The Kyrgios serve comes back with a vengeance. He wins to love. 

Fourth set - Khachanov holds 2-1: Khachanov holds to love. Kyrgios looks flat again. Can he pull himself out of it?

Fourth set - Kyrgios holds 1-1: The Aussie battles an early unforced error but secures the important early hold. Games on serve.

Fourth set - Khachanov holds 1-0: An easy service game for Khachanov. The Russian looks focused. Going to be hard for Nick to get back into this.

Third set - Kyrgios holds 4-4: The Aussie holds to love. He looks really confident. Both players looking strong.

Third set - Khachanov holds 4-3: After going 0-15, Khachanov shows his own steel to reel off dour consecutive points to hold himself.

Third set - Kyrgios holds 3-3: Kyrgios double faults to start the game but then wins every point after to hold.

Third set - Khachanov holds 3-2: We are back in the trend of easy service games. The Russian doesn't have any problems. Who can get the crucial break?

Second set - Khachanov holds 5-4: The Russian holds his serve to force Kyrgios to serve out the second set. Nick still looking a whole lot better than earlier in the match.

Second set - Kyrgios holds 5-3: A slight hiccup with a double fault to make it 30-30 but then Kyrgios rolls off two points to hold. He is close to levelling this match.

Second set - Khachanov holds 4-3: A bit of tweener action from Kyrgios but Khachanov holds serve without any issue. He cries out in celebration at the end of the game.

Second set - Kyrgios holds 4-2: Khachanov wins the first point but Kyrgios then rolls off four consecutively. He looks to be moving better.

Second set - Khachanov holds 3-2: Easy hold for the Russian. Match still feels flat but the Aussie has the all-important break.

Second set - Kyrgios holds 3-1: The Australian went 40-0 up, made two bad unforced errors and then Khachanov played a great lob to get deuce. But Kyrgios survives after one deuce.

Second set - Kyrgios holds 1-1: After telling his team he doesn't want to play because of the injury, Kyrgios holds serve comfortably. Still looks a concerning situation.
