Report: Kenny Dillingham, ASU Agree to New 5-Year Contract ...
Arizona State University and head football coach Kenny Dillingham reportedly agreed to a new five-year contract on Tuesday.
According to ESPN's Pete Thamel, the deal will put Dillingham "in the top tier of Big 12 coaching salaries" and provides a "pathway to extend to 10 years."
In just his second season as the head coach at ASU, the Sun Devils went 11-2, won the Big 12 and reached the College Football Playoff as the No. 4 seed.
Arizona State will face fifth-seeded Texas in the CFP quarterfinal at the Peach Bowl on Wednesday at 1 p.m. ET.
Dillingham, 34, was the youngest coach in FBS college football last season when he took the reins at his alma mater.
After graduating from ASU, Dillingham spent some time coaching at the high school level and then served as an offensive assistant at Arizona State from 2014 to 2015.
He was then a a graduate assistant, quarterbacks coach, tight ends coach and offensive coordinator during a three-year stint at Memphis before spending one year as the OC at Auburn, two at Florida State and one at Oregon.
Dillingham, who is from Phoenix, then took his dream job as the head coach at Arizona State, and he was tasked with turning around a struggling program.
Arizona State went 3-9 the season before Dillingham took over and then went 3-9 again in his first campaign at the helm, leading to the Sun Devils being picked to finish last in the Big 12 in 2024 as part of a preseason poll.
The Sun Devils far exceeded expectations, though, thanks in large part to running back Cam Skattebo, who rushed for 1,568 yards and 19 touchdowns, and caught 37 passes for 506 yards and three scores en route to finishing fifth in Heisman Trophy voting.
Dillingham also got the most out of freshman quarterback Sam Leavitt, who completed 63.2 percent of his passes for 2,663 yards, 24 touchdowns and five interceptions to go along with 383 yards and five scores on the ground.
Per Thamel, Dillingham had among the lowest base salaries among Big 12 head coaches this season at $4.05 million, but he has earned more than $2.5 million in bonuses, and can earn another $200,000 for each CFP win.
The Sun Devils are sizable underdogs in the CFP quarterfinals against a Longhorns team that has made back-to-back College Football Playoff appearances, but they have made a habit of overcoming the odds this season.
The winner of Arizona State vs. Texas will move to the semifinals to face the winner of the Rose Bowl between No. 8 Ohio State and No. 1 Oregon, which will take place Wednesday at 5 p.m. ET.
