Warriors coach Steve Kerr finally got sick of Jordan Poole
It finally happened.
Poole played just 10 minutes in a thriller at Crypto.com Arena — the fewest total minutes Poole has played in any game, regular or postseason, over the past two seasons. Poole also had zero points Monday night, marking the first time in his career he failed to score in a playoff game. He did, however, finish with two turnovers, a foul, an 0-for-4 night from the field and the third-worst +/- on the team (-6).
“It just wasn’t his night. He didn’t have it going,” Kerr said of Poole. “We had other guys who were playing well, Moses came in and did a great job, Donte came in and gave us good minutes, Gary obviously gave us a big lift starting the game.”
The fourth-year guard, who signed a four-year contract extension with Golden State before the season that could be worth up to $140 million, has been blasted at every turn this postseason. Rappers, former NBA players, members of the media and even former Warriors All-Star Gilbert Arenas have all laid into Poole during a forgettable postseason for the Michigan product, who has hit just 35.5% of his shots during the playoffs and 28.8% of his threes while averaging 5.4 fewer points per game than he did during last year's NBA championship run.
Poole played 2:10 in the third quarter and rode the pine for the entirety of the fourth quarter Monday as the Lakers edged out Golden State, 117-112, to take a commanding 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven second-round playoff series.
On the way back to the bench in the third, Poole was noticeably upset and was eventually calmed down by Andre Iguodala.
Poole had complained about his somewhat decreased playing time these playoffs, even before hitting a new low Monday night. After Monday's debacle, NBC Sports Bay Area reporter Kerith Burke described a Warriors locker room thick with "tension" while Poole was speaking. "My work ethic doesn't change, my routine doesn't change, maybe opportunity changes, but you can only control what you can control," she quoted him saying.
The last time Poole played 10 or fewer minutes was Jan. 28, 2021, when he played six minutes in a 114-93 loss to Phoenix.
