Georgias James Cook had Superman moment for Buffalo in AFC

ATHENS — James Cook went “Superman” for the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, carrying the banner for Georgia’s “RBU” in sensational fashion.

Cook’s determined run, leap and stretch for a 1-yard touchdown in the NFC Championship Game is a highlight for the ages, even as Buffalo fell short in a 32-29 AFC Championship Game loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

Cook led the Bills offensive attack with 13 carries for 85 yards and two touchdowns, also scoring on a 6-yard sweep, along with catching all three passes thrown his way for 49 yards.

It was Cook’s sixth multiple-touchdown game this season for the Bills, matching the mark set by former Buffalo star O.J. Simpson for the most in franchise history. Cook also matched Simpson (23 in 1975) as the only Buffalo player to score more than 20 touchdowns in a season.

Georgia fans knew all about Cook’s explosive, game-changing abilities before the Bills drafted him in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, which now looks like a bargain as Cook has recorded back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing regular seasons with 1,122 in 2023 and 1,009 this season — 16th most among NFL backs.

The 25-year-old Cook added another 272 yards on 53 carries in Buffalo’s postseason, averaging 90.7 yards rushing per game at a 5.1 yards-per-carry clip.

Cook was just as clutch at Georgia, as it was his explosive 67-yard run — one play after current Eagles’ star Jalen Carter blocked a field goal attempt — that set up the Bulldogs’ go-ahead touchdown in the 33-18 win over Alabama in the 2022 CFP Championship Game in Indianapolis at the conclusion of the 2021 season.

The former Miami Central High School standout was just as impressive in the Orange Bowl CFP Semifinal win over Michigan the game before, carrying six times for 32 yards and reeling in four catches for 112 yards including a 39-yard touchdown pass.

Looking back at that 2021 Georgia football team, it’s hard to imagine a defensive coordinator coming up with a plan to stop the likes of current NFL skill position stars Cook, Brock Bowers, Ladd McConkey and George Pickens.

Indeed, and that was on a Georgia team that also had five first-round NFL picks on its defensive line along with future NFL starters at linebacker and in the secondary.

Cook finished his four-year Georgia career with a modest 230 carries for 1,503 yards and 14 touchdowns. UGA rotated snaps between Cook, current Las Vegas Raiders back Zamir White and Seattle Seahawks back Kenny McIntosh, designating White (25 career touchdowns) as the goal-line back.

Cook remains a shy interview and man of few words even with his rising stardom, but DawgNation captured his NFL Combine interview in 2022, a rare occasion where he spoke at length while interviewing for the professional ranks.

“I’m versatile, I can do it all, I can play special teams, I can split out wide, I can run between the tackles and I can catch the ball,” Cook said at that time.

And now, Cook has shown, he can fly like Superman when the situation calls for it.
