Inter Milan vs. Barcelona result, highlights & analysis as Calhanoglu secures crucial Champions League win

Inter Milan won a crucial Champions League victory at the San Siro thanks to Hakan Calhanoglu’s fine strike. The hosts were able to win 1-0 against their Group C rivals Barcelona.

Both sides had chances in Milan's busy opening. Joaquin Correa saw a penalty call denied by VAR. Calhanoglu took over to power the home side just before the break.

Barcelona did respond to the restart with Ousmane Dembele posing a constant threat against the counter attack and Pedri's equaliser, which was recorded by VAR.

Inter, however, has a significant advantage in the group as they try to overpower Barcelona in the race for second, behind Bayern Munich.

Gritty Inter dig in For Inzaghi

After scoring just eight points in Serie A and three in Champions League, Inzaghi was under great pressure when he entered the game.

Although reports from Italy question his long-term future at the San Siro, his players put in a strong performance for their manager.

Next week's trip at the Camp Nou will determine second place in Group B and Inter travel to Catalonia.

Calhanoglu's stunning winner will be the main story of the night. But Andre Onana and Milan Skriniar's crucial stops kept Barcelona at bay to give the former Italian international some breathing room.

Lewandowski's Off-night Blunts Barcelona

Robert Lewandowski's first month as a Barcelona player has been extraordinary with 12 goals in all competitions.

Although his goal was a great one, he struggled with the flow against a well-trained Inter back line.

Skriniar was able to limit Dembele in their one-on-1 battles, providing the main outlet for visitors.

Xavi stayed with him through the final stages, but he couldn't steer home a late chance from Dembele’s set piece. This was a rare blank for the Polish international.

Xavi, Barcelona's head coach, is not afraid of the challenge presented by Inter.

"Inter is still a strong team. They have a different system to anything we’ve come across this season and two strikers is not something you see much in Spain. 

"They’re a tough opponent. We’ve already lost to Bayern. We must match the performance in Munich, but win.

“It looks like it’s going to be a battle between us, as we both lost to Bayern, so we can’t fail now.”

Inzaghi is under severe pressure ahead of tonight’s game. He has 12 points from eight Serie A matches in 2022/23 and his position could be weakened if Inter loses.

"Barcelona is very strong and complete. We are one of the three best European football teams and we understand the importance of the game. We’re Inter and we’ll try to play with all our strengths but it could be a game of suffering.

"They are aggressive and have incredible ball recovery players. They know how to do everything in possession and they have now added Lewandowski who is a great player."
