India vs West Indies 2nd ODI LIVE: Lewis, Hope take guard as Windies begins chase of 388
Hello, and welcome to Sportstar's live coverage of the second One-Day International between India and the West Indies at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam.
[IN PROGRESS- WEST INDIES BATTING]
7:25 pm: FIFTY FOR SHAI HOPE! At the moment, he is proving to be the lone warrior after a flurry of wickets!
7:08 pm: WHAT A BEAUUUTTYYYY FROM JADEJA!! He's cleaned up Roston Chase and Windies is now struggling! He beats him with a delightful legbreak. It is flighted up, enticing Pooran to lunge forward. The ball turns sharply after pitching and crashes into the off-stump. From middle and leg to top of off, that's a classic spinners dismissal.
6:58 pm: RUN-OUT AND HETMYER HAS BEEN SENT PACKING! What an effort in the field from the Shreyas Iyer and an even better throw to run Hetmyer out. Jadeja's short of length deliver was through the cover-point gap. The ball was about to hit the fence when Iyer pulled it back in time with his dive. The batsmen looked for third run when Iyer's pin-point throw to the bowler's end found Hetmyer way short of his ground. What a huge wicket for the Indians.
6:44 pm: GONE!!! Evin Lewis throws his wicket away! Thakur pitches it short and invites Lewis to play the pull. However, the timings is poor and the ball comes off the top edge of the bat. High into the night sky, Iyer keeps his eyes on the ball and completes a good catch at deep square leg.
6:32 pm: 50-RUN PARTNERSHIP FOR THE FIRST WICKET! Evin Lewis couldn't have brought it up in a more glamorous fashion. Thakur's fullish delivery outside off is threaded through the cover-point gap with utmost ease for four.
6:24 pm: SHOUT FOR CAUGHT BEHIND! Chahar outsmarts Hope with a slower bouncer. Hope misses it and the ball dips on its way to the keeper. The bowler was confident but nobody else was. Hence, no review was taken after the umpire gave it not-out. Hope then hit Chahar for two boundaries to ruin a good-looking over. First, he pulled Chahar before flicking a straight one down the fine leg region for four.
6:17 pm: Beaten for pace and four! Lewis will take that! Skiddy short ball from Shami and Lewis was hurried into the pull. The ball flies off the top edge and over the keeper's head for four.
Mohammad Shami is introduced into the attack.
6:11 pm: DRIVEN FOR FOUR! Hope continues to keep the scoreboard ticking! The Windies openers are batting sensibly here! Minimum risk, maximum reward! Pitched up and he leans forward to thread the ball into the gap.
6:04 pm: SHOT! Short and wide from Thakur and Hope just guides it past the point fielder for four. Good-looking shot! He used the depth of the crease really well.
5:58 pm: SHOUT FOR LBW, BUT NOT-OUT! The ball swings in sharply to Evin Lewis from the good length area and rams into the pads. Thakur goes up but the umpire gives it not-out as the ball grazed the inside edge before hitting the pads. FOUR! Thakur drags the next one wide of leg stump as Lewis helps it down the fine leg fence for four. Seven runs from the Thakur over.
Shardul Thakur is sharing the new ball with Chahar.
5:53 pm: DROPPED!!! Lifeline for Shai Hope! Early chance and KL Rahul drops a straightforward chance down at second slip. The ball was swinging away from the right-hander and tempted Hope to drive at it. Usually Rohit Sharma is present in the slip cordon, but he is yet to take the field after that magnificent knock. Manish Pandey is the substitute fielder for him. One run off the first over.
Chahar to Lewis and the second innings is underway.
Deepak Chahar to open the bowling for India.
West Indies openers, Evin Lewis and Shai Hope, have made their way out to the centre.
The star of the first innings, Rohit Sharma, is one of the nominees for the Sportsman of the Year (Cricket) for Sportstar's Aces Awards. Click here to vote!
Windies have a mammoth task at hand in order to seal the series tonight. Meanwhile, India, may have done just enough to be able to level the series.
5:18 pm: INDIA ENDS IT INNINGS AT 387/5 AFTER 50 OVERS. Kedar Jadhav hits Keemo Paul for three boundaries in the last over as India bags 14 runs off the last over.
LAST OVER COMING UP!
5:14: OUT! Iyer is caught behind off Sheldon Cottrell. Tries to pull, but the ball catches a faint edge on its way to the keeper.
Meanwhile, a little something for you to read on Kohli's rare duck.
5:09 pm: FIFTY FOR IYER! His second of the series. His fourth fifty in a row! The purple patch continues. Cuts the ball to sweeper cover for a single to get to the milestone.
OUT! One shots too many. Pant falls for a quick-fire 16-ball 39. Tries to thwart the ball over long on, but the ball finds the top edge and is caught by Pooran at deep cover.
31 OFF THE 47TH OVER! Iyer moves to 48 and this is pure carnage from the Indian batsmen. Woah, I'm having a hard time keeping up with them. Imagine the plight of the Windies bowlers.
5:00 pm: Adding salt to wounds here, is Shreyas Iyer. Back-to-back sixes off Roston Chase and this partnership has reached 63 off just 20 balls. Iyer hits two more sixes to cap off the over.
4:58 pm: Interesting call here from Pollard. Brings in Roston Chase. NO BALL! Where was that going? The ball seems to have slipped out of the spinner's hand as it flies to keeper above the waist level of Iyer. Batsman also take a single and Pant can only take single off the free-hit.
4:57 pm: PANT IS MUSCLING EVERYTHING TODAY! 38 off 13 already! That's serious hitting and Cottrell is under serious pressure! FOUR over backward point, SIX over long-on. TWO CONSECUTIVE FOURS over extra cover. 24 off the over.
4:52 pm: PANT GOES THE DISTANCE AGAIN! First ball of Cottrell's over, which was slow and short, Pant latches on to it nd pulls it over deep square leg for six.
4:49 pm: 300 up for India! Rishabh Pant brings it up with a six! Stand and deliver! Whips Joseph, who pitches is full and wide, over long-off for a six. Take six more! Pant, this time, claims a maximum over deep extra-cover. Fuller ball which wasn't time well enough but it had enough power in it to travel the distance.
4:44 pm: OUT!! The marathon innings comes to an end! 138 balls, 17 boundaries and five sixes later, Rohit Sharma takes the long walk back to the pavilion after a spectacular knock of 159. Tries to cut the ball away, but the length wasn't quite there. Edges the ball to keeper Shai Hope. Cottrell brings out the salute as Sharma walks back to a rousing applause from the crowd!
4:36 pm: 150 UP FOR ROHIT SHARMA! He has done it in style! A maximum over the bowler's head foa maximum! This is 8th score of 150+. Second best to him are David Warner and Sachin Tendulkar, with six 150+ scores each.
4:32 pm: Iyer joins the party! Holder with another loosener as he stays it down Iyer's pads. All the batsman had to do was get on ball and the ball was headed one way, to the fence.
4:30 pm: Rohit Sharma is breathing fire at the moment. Keemo Paul comes around the wicket and pitches it short. Rohit Sharma hustles, leans back and pulls the ball over long leg on one leg for six. A little tongue twister there for you guys!
Here's something for you all to read. Rohit Sharma joins Sourav Ganguly, David Warner in record books
Right then, last 10 overs to go. India is 260/2. How many more can India get? 90-110? What do you reckon?
4:26 pm: India crosses the 250 mark in the 40th over as Rohit Sharma continues to make merry. The Hitman hits Pollard for two consecutive boundaries before running a triple. The first up is hit through the fine leg region and follows it up with cracking down past the wide point fielder. It was short and wide from Pollard and with no real pace in it, an in-form Rohit was always going to put it away.
Shreyas Iyer joins Rohit in the middle.
4:16 pm: OUT!! What's happened here? The crowd is stunned and goes silent. Virat Kohli is out for a golden duck. Once again, Roston Chase is the catcher. It was a slower ball from Pollard which completely outfoxed the Indian skipper. Slower bouncer and forced Kohli to reach for it. The ball was mis-timed by Chase's jump wasn't as he did well to cling on.
Virat Kohli is the new man in after Rahul departs for 102.
4:12 pm: OUT!! Hard to believe but Windies finally clinch a wicket. KL Rahul departs after scoring his century. Rahul throws the kitchen sink at the ball, as they say, while attempting a backward slash. Ends up top-edging the ball and it is taken by Roston Chase at third man. He walks off with a huge cheer from the crowd.
4:09 pm: Dispatched! Stand and deliver! Now that both batsmen have crossed 100 and with a little under 13 overs remaining, expect them to approach the remainder of this innings with more vigour and expression. Coming to the ball, Joseph pitched it up, right in the slot for Rohit, who slammed it down the ground for four.
4:08 pm: CENTURY FOR KL RAHUL! FLICKED PAST THE SHORT FINE LEG FIELDER FOR FOUR TO BRING UP HIS 3RD ODI CENTURY!
4:06 pm: The crowd erupts into euphoria once again after an unbelievable six from Rohit Sharma. Wow, that was some hit! He was on the floor, on one knee after losing his balance. But he still timed it well enough to send the ball sailing 74 metres over the cover region.
This is India's sixth double century stand for the first wicket in ODIs.
4:00 pm: 200-run stand for the opening pair! Fullish delivery from Holder and Rahul negotiates it with a single down the long-on region.
This is Rohit Sharma's 7th ODI century of 2019. He joins the elite company of Sachin Tendulkar (9), Sourav Ganguly and David Warner (7 each) for most ODI centuries scored in a calendar year.
3:56 pm: 100 for Rohit Sharma! 28th ODI century for the 'Hitman'!! It's come off just 107 balls. Plays the good length delivery to mid-on for a single and the arms go up in the air. So does the crowd in Vizag and everyone in the dressing room.
3:55 pm: Rohit moves to 99 with a glance to short fine leg. KL Rahul plays it smart as he takes a single to hand the strike back to Rohit.
How much will the host get here? 350? 370?
3:49 pm: FOUR! SIX! and Sharma is just three runs away from his century. Pierre pushes it quicker and Rohit makes room and whips it over extra cover for four. Next ball, he wallops the ball over wide long-on for a maximum. Such quick transfer of the weight is just another testament to his class. Pierre pays the price for pitching the quicker one very short.
3:47 pm: INTO THE 90S, is Rahul! Just nine runs away from his century. He is handed back the strike after Rohit nudges the ball to deep backward point for a single.
3:44 pm: What happened there? The umpires have gone up to third umpire to review a run-out. Rahul cuts the ball brilliantly through point. The pair decided to run back for two, but no without any confusion. Rohit is left stranded in the middle of the pitch but the throw from the deep is horrendous. The fielder backing collects the ball and hits the stumps directly, but Rohit was safe. FOUR! If you don't take your chances, Rohit will make the mos of it. Blasted down the ground for four. The ball bounces just in front of the cushions.
3:31 pm: Edged and short yet again! Nothing is going West Indies' way and everything is going India's way. Square cut by Rohit falls just short of the short third-man fielder. DROPPED! Next ball, Rohit Sharma skies the ball with a lofted shot, trying to get a move on and it is dropped by Hetmyer. The ball was in the air for a long, long time and Hetmyer did well to cover a lot of ground from long-off. But he went too hard at it and in the end, he ended up spilling the chance with his diving effort.
3:25 pm: 150 up for India! This is exactly what the host needed! A strong start from its openers and both Rohit and Rahul have done just that. The Vizag crowd is up on its feet and so is the India dressing room. Colossal effort from the pair as the milestone is achieved in just 153 balls. Rahul moves into the 80s with a single towards the deep point fielder.
3:22 pm: Sheldon Cottrell is brought back into the attack and continues to leak runs. Strayed short and straight and Rohit Sharma obliges. Leans back, rotates his body and plays it over the short fine leg fielder for four. Seven runs off the over.
3:17 pm: Guided down the third man boundary for four. Rohit Sharma, with his lazy elegance, plays the ball late and past the short third man fielder. Keemo Paul concedes one more boundary, this time to Rahul. KL tries to slash it over point but the ball finds the thick outside edge and flies past the keeper for four.
Both batsmen have begun to shift gears now. 29 runs have been scored off the last three overs. There was a passage of play when India had scored only six runs off 22 balls.
3:07 pm: FIFTY UP FOR ROHIT SHARMA! 43rd ODI fifty for Rohit. Brings it up with a half-pull hit to the fence for four.
2:57 pm: 100 up for India with release shot from Rohit! Pulls the ball over mid-on for four. It wasn't timed well enough as the ball was not short enough to be pulled, but he did just enough to power the ball over the fence for four. Rahul shifting gears now. A lovely flick off his pads for a four through the mid-wicket region followed by an effortless square cut for another boundary.
2:55 pm: Last 25 balls and only six runs have been scored. Alzarri Joseph is bowling a great spell here, including a maiden over. Holden has brought himself back on after an impressive opening spell.
2:37 pm: FIFTY FOR RAHUL! It's come in quick time, off just 46 balls. Takes a single towards short fine leg to bring up his fifth ODI half century.
RAHUL SURVIVES! Rahul goes down on one knee to play the sweep. The ball finds the top edge and goes high in the air and luckily fall Rahul, falls in no-man's land. The pair run a brace.
2:33 pm: Uppish but four. Short and wide from Joseph and Rohit goes at it hard. He slices the ball over point, who was interested for a moment, but the ball flies over the diving fielder for four.
2:21 pm: Alzarri Joseph is brought into the attack. He beats Rohit on his very first delivery, the ball whizzes past the outside edge. SIX! Can't bowl there to Rohit! Joseph digs it short and the ball is angling into the batsman. Once again, Rohit helps the ball on its way behind the square leg region for a maximum.
2:13 pm: Welcome boundary for Rohit! Pierre gets some purchase from the deck as the ball turns away sharply from the right-hander pitching, finds the edge and runs away past a diving Roston Chaseat short third man for four. SIX! Rahul dances down the track and thwarts the ball for a six over the cow corner.
2:08 pm: Four singles from Keemo's first over.
Keemo Paul is introduced into the attack.
2:00 pm: He starts off well, conceding just five off the first over.
Debutant Khary Pierre is introduced into the attack, replacing Cottrell.
1:56 pm: SIX! Shot of the day so far! Rahul punishes Holder for pitching short and wide outside off with an upper cut over backward point for a six. Right off the meat of his blade.
1:52 pm: Good-looking boundary from Rahul. Short of length from Cottrell, Rahul stands tall and punches the ball on the back foot for four. Two balls later, Rahul makes full use of a freebie. A full-toss outside off in the powerplay overs usually meets one fate. Rahul slices the ball through cover-point region for another hit to the fence.
1:45 pm: First boundary of the day comes off Rohit's bat. Cottrell strays it straight and short. Sharma leans back and plays it behind square for a four. Edged but doesn't carry. Rohit pokes the ball angling away with soft hands and that's why the ball doesn't carry to Jason Holder at wide slip. Four and Rahul is up and running. Throws the hands at the ball pitched up and outside off. The ball flies off the edge past the slip cordon for four.
1:40pm Jason Holder sharing the new ball with Cottrell. KL Rahul nudges the ball down to third man for a single to get off the mark. Four from the over, India 7/0.
1:35 pm: Beaten on the first ball. The ball whizzes past Rohit Sharma's outside edge. Usually, Cottrell swings the ball in to the right-hander but this one goes the other way. Next up, he bowls a wide. Well-fielded by Pollard at mid-wicket. Pitchd up, swinging in and Sharma flicks it off his pads. No run. Front foot defence on the third ball. First runs off the bat. Punched off the back foot through covers for a brace and the 'Hitman' is up and running. Three runs from the first over.
Cottrell to Rohit Sharma and here we go!!
Indian openers Rohit Sharma and K.L. Rahul take guard in the middle. Sheldon Cottrell to open the bowling for West Indies.
The players are out in the field and are observing a minute's silence for the late West Indies legend Basil Butcher

PLAYING XIs:
India: Rohit Sharma, Lokesh Rahul, Virat Kohli(c), Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant(w), Kedar Jadhav, Ravindra Jadeja, Deepak Chahar, Mohammed Shami, Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav
West Indies (Playing XI): Shai Hope(w), Evin Lewis, Shimron Hetmyer, Nicholas Pooran, Roston Chase, Kieron Pollard(c), Jason Holder, Keemo Paul, Alzarri Joseph, Sheldon Cottrell, Khary Pierre
This is what both the captains said at the toss:
Kieron Pollard: We are going to field first. Sometimes you don't know how the surface plays, so better to know what you are chasing. We have to deal with what is in the present. We have two changes: Evin Lewis is back and Pierre.
Virat Kohli: We wanted to field first. This is a ground where we have chased well. The pitch is better to play on than the last game. I think the dew was a massive factor in the last game. Hetmyer played brilliantly and Hope as well. We need to be more brave and bring in the intensity to the game. It boils down to small things. Our overseas record has been better. Shivam Dube misses out and Shardul Thakur comes in.
TOSS UPDATE: West Indies wins the toss and elects to bowl
PITCH REPORT: The average score is 280 and teams have been able to chase 300+ scores - it is a batting paradise. This glare you are seeing from the pitch is because it is a white color pitch. Plenty of runs, looks like a good hard surface. The batsmen will be able to play their shots without worrying about the deviation. Itis very close to how marble flooring is and there is no dust, soil or everything. The pitch reported was presented by Sunil Gavaskar.
We are just a few moments away from the toss.
PREVIEW:
India finds itself in a do-or-die situation going into the second ODI against West Indies in Visakhapatnam, where the two teams were involved in a high-scoring encounter last year.
The Caribbeans are on a high after the resounding win over India in the first one-dayer at Chepauk on Sunday. Captain Kieron Pollard has reasons to hope for a repeat showing against Virat Kohli’s side in the second ODI in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday.
West Indies should be wary of Kohli, who can change gears single-handedly. He usually stands out when the chips are down. But he will need support from team-mates to keep the series alive.
India’s fortunes revolve around the form of the top three — openers Rohit Sharma and K.L. Rahul, and Kohli at No.3.
There were positives amid the embarrassing defeat. Shreyas Iyer (70 off 88) re-asserted his growing stature as a reliable No.4. And finally, wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant came good to put a temporary stop to all the criticism hovering around him following his inconsistent run in the recent past. The southpaw scored 71 off 69 balls.
READ| IND vs WI: What happened in the first ODI
The failure of spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav on the spin-friendly Chennai pitch is a concern. They could not even pick one wicket.
The entire Indian bowling department struggled including pacers Deepak Chahar, Mohammed Shami and Shivam Dube in the face of a calculated assault by the century-makers Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer.
It is imperative for the Indian team to make serious amends against a team which proved to be no push-over so far on this tour.
The pitch is likely to assist the batsmen, so it could be challenging for the bowlers. It will be interesting to see what options the Indian think tank will look for in bowling attack in the must-win game.
In a way, the high-pressure match will also test the maturity level of the young guns in both the teams.
