Grand Ole Opry apologizes for Elle King's profane performance ...
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (TMX/Gray News) - The Grand Ole Opry has apologized to concertgoers after Elle King drunkenly botched her profanity-filled performance at a Dolly Parton tribute show Friday in honor of the country star’s 78th birthday.
“Hi, my name is Elle King. I’m f***king hammered,” the 34-year-old singer tells the audience in a TikTok video of the incident. The admission came after she slurred her way through Parton’s song “Marry Me.”
At one point, the “Ex’s & Oh’s” singer made up words when she forgot the real lyrics.
“I don’t know the lyrics to this thing in this f***king town. Don’t tell Dolly ‘cause it’s her birthday,” she sang.
The swearing on stage continued, as she berated audience members for having to see her perform.
“I’m not even gonna f***king lie, you bought tickets for this s**t? You ain’t getting your money back,” King said.
“I can barely play another person’s song; let me see if I can play one of mine,” she said.
King is the daughter of actor Rob Schneider. Having grown up in Los Angeles and later Ohio, many people on social media wondered why she was putting on a fake southern accent during the show.
Others were upset about all the profanity, which typically isn’t seen on the Opry’s family-friendly stage.
“Elle King ruined the night with her horrible, drunk, and profane performance,” read a post from X user @JudasBellmont. “Dolly Parton would’ve been mortified. For our first time at The Opry, it was a shame we all had to witness that.”
The legendary venue responded to the post to apologize.
“We deeply regret and apologize for the language that was used during last night’s second Opry performance,” the Grand Ole Opry wrote.
The social media user replied, “It was such a disappointment to spend $300 on tickets for a show where one of the artists ruined an entire night. I mean it’s The Opry, the greatest country venue in the world. That performance was like lackluster karaoke performer wasted out of their minds. Awful.”
