(Gray News) – Retired NBA player and Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade revealed he had a cancerous tumor removed from his kidney.
According to a report from PEOPLE, Wade made the announcement in the latest episode of his podcast on Thursday.
Wade said he had been having symptoms related to problems with urinating. He got the diagnosis from a full-body scan after “years” of putting off going to the doctor for a physical, he said.
The 43-year-old said he had 40% of his right kidney removed over a year ago on Dec. 18, 2023. Doctors confirmed the tumor was cancerous.
Wade didn’t go into further detail about his current health.
During his time in the NBA, Wade played for the Miami Heat, Chicago Bulls and Cleveland Cavaliers. His final game was in 2019, and his jersey was retired in 2020.
Wade is married to actress Gabrielle Union, and they share a 6-year-old daughter together. He also has three other children, ages 11, 17 and 22, and is the legal guardian of his 21-year-old nephew.
