Deshaun Watson undergoes MRI on ankle injury suffered in Browns
Deshaun Watson underwent a MRI on the left ankle in which he injured during the first half of the Browns' come-from-behind win over the Ravens.

BEREA — The ankle injury that sent Deshaun Watson to the locker room just before halftime Sunday in Baltimore sent him to get an MRI on Monday.

Browns coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed on a Zoom call Monday the quarterback did undergo a test on the left ankle he injured during a come-from-behind 33-31 win over the Ravens. Stefanski, though, had no other information regarding the injury, including its potential impact on Sunday's AFC North showdown with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

"Yeah, I can't get in the Sunday [game] just yet," Stefanski said. "I don't have those MRI results just yet on our guys. We'll see where we're at when Wednesday rolls around."

Watson sustained the injury late in the first half when the Ravens' Jadeveon Clowney sacked him for a 1-yard loss. He went to the locker room right before halftime, but emerged right before the start of the second half to play the rest of the game.

Watson walked out of his postgame press conference in Baltimore on Sunday wearing a boot on the ankle/foot. Despite the walking boot after the game, he didn't sound too concerned about missing any time.

"Yeah, I'll be fine," Watson said postgame. "I mean, right now I'm not feeling well. I'll be fine. I'll be ready to go whatever time it is, Monday, one o'clock or Sunday, sorry if it's one o'clock or whenever, I'll be ready to go and ready for that opportunity for us."

Watson played a near-flawless second half on the ankle injury against Baltimore. He completed all 14 passes over the final two quarters for 134 yards and a touchdown.

That was in stark contrast to his first-half performance, even before suffering the ankle injury. Watson was 6-of-20 passing for 79 yards, an interception — which Ravens safety Kyle Hamilton returned for a touchdown on the second play of the game — and a 22.7 passer rating in the first half.

Watson finished 20-of-34 passing for 213 yards with a touchdown, an interception and a 74.8 passer rating. He ran eight times for 37 yards, not counting a 2-point conversion that pulled the Browns within 24-17 late in the third quarter.

"You’ve just got to start off that way," Watson said Sunday. "We didn't start off that way, but it's a 60-minute game, and when I came in to get looked at, I just wanted to just make sure I locked in. And this was going to be a big moment for myself, because I didn't want to let my teammates down and I knew that I had to put a lot more on my shoulders than what I should have because we put ourselves in a hole.

"But I was ready and prepared for that moment. I didn't fear anything and I just focused on one play at a time, and that's what we did."

The ankle injury comes just as Watson is getting back to playing after more than a month of uncertainty about a rotator cuff strain in his right shoulder. That injury initially occurred against the Tennessee Titans in Week 3, when Watson took a hit to his shoulder by Titans safety Amani Hooker in the third quarter.

Watson finished out that game, but didn't play a full game again until a win over the Arizona Cardinals on Nov. 5. He tried to play in Week 7 at the Indianapolis Colts, but left with 3:04 remaining in the first quarter after being knocked down by Colts defensive end Dayo Odeyingbo.

The shoulder injury, which didn't become public until the Wednesday after the Titans games, kept Watson out of three combined games. Rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson started a Week 4 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, while P.J. Walker started a Week 6 win over the San Francisco 49ers and a Week 8 loss at the Seattle Seahawks.

Walker also came in to lead the Browns to a come-from-behind win at the Colts. He did come in for the final snap of the first half Sunday to throw an unsuccessful Hail Mary pass after Watson went to the locker room.
