Kansas football at No. 19 Coastal Carolina: Jayhawks lose 49-22 against Chanticleers
CONWAY, S.C. — Kansas football's 2021 regular season continued Friday on the road against No. 19 Coastal Carolina.
Led by head coach Lance Leipold and starting quarterback Jason Bean, the Jayhawks came in search of their first road win of the year and their first victory on the road of Leipold's tenure leading the program. Last week, prior to this matchup against the Chanticleers, Kansas opened its campaign with a 17-14 win against South Dakota.

How did the Jayhawks perform away from Lawrence in front of a hostile crowd? How much of an improvement did Leipold's offense and defense make, if any? And was this Big 12 Conference team be able to make the most of its opportunity against a ranked opponent from the Sun Belt Conference?

FINAL: Coastal Carolina 49, Kansas 22Coastal Carolina handed Kansas its first loss of the season, winning 49-22 against the Jayhawks. There were times Leipold's squad looked as if it could take this game into the fourth quarter and have a shot at a win, but the Chanticleers ended up being too tough of an opponent.
The Jayhawks are back in action next week with a home matchup against Big 12 Conference foe Baylor.
Coastal Carolina scores againKansas is trailing 49-22 with 4:49 left in the game after an 11-yard touchdown pass from Grayson McCall to Kameron Brown, and the ensuing extra point. The Jayhawks have struggled to slow the Chanticleers down all night.
Coastal Carolina goes up three scoresOn another rushing score, the Chanticleers extended their lead. This was a three-yard run by Reese White. And after an extra point, Coastal Carolina leads 42-22 with 14:11 left.
End third quarter: Coastal Carolina 35, Kansas 22 Another fourth down conversion attempt fails for KansasThe Jayhawks were driving and had a shot to extend their drive, which was in Coastal Carolina territory. But a pass from Jason Bean was dropped by Velton Gardner with about four and a half minutes left in the third quarter. The Chanticleers took over at their own 28 yard line.
Coastal Carolina extends its leadThe Chanticleers offense returned to form and scored on a 19-yard touchdown run by Reese White to go up two scores again. After the extra point, Coastal Carolina leads 35-22 with 8:37 left in the third quarter.
Jason Bean runs for a score once againKansas' defense came up with a key stop, and the Jayhawks' offense took advantage. Bean put the exclamation point on Kansas' ensuing drive with a 46-yard touchdown run. After the extra point, the Jayhawks trail 28-22 with 11:36 left in the third quarter. Bean now has more than 100 yards rushing.
Halftime stats: Coastal Carolina 28, Kansas 15 Jason Bean scrambles for a scoreBean showed off his athleticism late in the second quarter with a 34-yard scamper to the end zone for Kansas. The two-point conversion attempt failed, though, on an incomplete pass. With 1:36 left before halftime it's a 28-15 lead for Coastal Carolina.
Coastal Carolina extends its leadThe Chanticleers took advantage of stopping the Jayhawks on a fourth-and-short conversion attempt, and on a drive that started at the Kansas 35 yard line scored a touchdown. Coastal Carolina found the end zone on a two-yard rushing score by Reese White with 2:36 left in the second quarter and an extra point made it 28-9.
Kansas forces first turnover of its seasonWhile the Jayhawks are trailing, they aren't out of the game and their defense just forced its first turnover on the young season. Kansas' Kyron Johnson recovered a fumble forced by Malcolm Lee on Grayson McCall on a Coastal Carolina drive that was nearing the red zone.
Kansas falls further behind on a blocked puntCoastal Carolina blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown with 8:25 left in the second quarter. After the extra point, the Chanticleers lead 21-9.
Coastal Carolina scores againCoastal Carolina found the end zone again, this time on a two-yard rushing touchdown by Grayson McCall with 11:02 left in the second quarter. After the extra point, the Chanticleers led 14-9.
First quarter stats: Kansas up 9-7 Kansas takes the lead backA drive that nearly ended due to an interception instead finished with a touchdown run for the Jayhawks. Devin Neal delivered the score on a two-yard run with 1:40 left in the first quarter, but the extra point was blocked so it's just a 9-7 lead for Kansas. Earlier in the drive Jason Bean threw a pass that was initially ruled an interception, but upon a review that was overturned and called an incomplete pass.
Coastal Carolina strikes backCoastal Carolina didn't waste much time on its first offensive drive and took a 7-3 lead after a 33-yard touchdown pass with 8:13 left in the first quarter. Grayson McCall completed the pass to Jaivon Heiligh for the score.
Kansas takes 3-0 leadThe Jayhawks took their opening drive into Chanticleers' territory and opened up the scoring with a 46-yard field goal by Jacob Borcila with 10:07 left in the first quarter. Kansas moved the ball well through the air and on the ground, and was lucky that a fumble by Jason Bean on a run wasn't recovered by Coastal Carolina.
KickoffCoastal Carolina kicked off to Kansas to start things off. It appears the Chanticleers will get the ball to start the second half.
