Roquan Smith's interception late in the fourth quarter led to Cairo Santos' game-winning 30-yard field goal as time expired as the Bears defeated the Houston Texans 23-20 Sunday at Soldier Field.

Houston fought back with a Mills-to-Jordan Akins touchdown pass of 4 yards and Dameon Pierce's 1-yard touchdown run to take a 14-13 lead at the half. Herbert ran for another touchdown in the second quarter, while the Texans scored two field goals to tie the game at 20-20.

Herbert led the Bears' offense with a record-breaking 157 yards on 20 carries, two touchdowns and 281 rushing yards. Herbert was brought in after David Montgomery sustained a lower right leg injury on the Bears' second drive. Eberflus informed reporters that Montgomery is doing well and that it was a positive.

Justin Fields, Quarterback, completed 8 of 17 passes for an impressive 106 yards and threw two interceptions. Fields stated that he needs to improve at "a lot" but was most upset by his two interceptions, which he said were "stuff [he] can control."

Fields stated that "I didn’t play as well" as he wanted. "Like I always say I have higher expectations than anyone else, I expect more from myself. I have to be better for my teammates. I'm proud of the defense and how they played. Everyone on the team deserves my admiration. Although we all wanted to be better, it's just everyone in the locker room fighting for one another."

Mills completed 20 out of 32 passes for 245 yard, one touchdown, and two interceptions. With 20 carries for 80 yards, Pierce led the Houston rush attack with a score.

After Santos' 47-yard field goal on the first drive of the game, the Bears led 3-0. Fields sustained the drive on 3rd and 9 by scrambling out of the pocket for a 29-yard rush – the longest of his career – to reach the Houston 35.

With 6:45 left in the first quarter, Herbert's 11 yard score on the Bears second possession increased Chicago's lead to 10-0. After receiving the handoff from a jet sweep, Equanimeous St. brown ran 41 yards to start the 6-play, 81 yard drive. Herbert ran 30 yards on three runs after replacing Montgomery.

Fields stated, "That was no surprise." "We know what kind [Herbert] is. He's a great running back. He is a great person. He's a great person. I'm proud of his running the ball, the blocking of our offensive line for him, and just overall, I'm proud of him.

Mills' 4-yard touchdown pass from Akins to Mills cut the Bears' lead down to 10-7 on the Bears' next drive. It happened with 3:40 remaining in the first quarter. The Texans reached the Chicago 20 thanks to Chris Moore's 52-yard deep pass to Mills. The Texans' A.J. Cann recovered the ball and saved the drive.

Fields was intercepted at the Chicago 41 by Jalen Pitre with 2:54 remaining in the first quarter. He had overthrown Cole Kmet, the tight end, down the middle of field. Mills brought down the Texans to the 5, with a 17-yard pass from Brandin Cooks, followed by a 19 yard completion to Nico Collins.

The Bears defense came up big on 2nd and goal from the 7, when cornerback Kindle Vildor intercepted Mills' pass meant for Cooks in end zone. Jackson tipped the throw and he had his second interception of season.

Eberflus stated that Eddie Jackson was the interception by them. Then we answered with our interception at the end zone. "He also forced [a] turnover; we were impressed with his performance. In those moments of sudden change, the defense performed very well. We talk about rising up when we get the ball on the minus side.

After Pierce's 1-yard rushing touchdown, the Texans led 14-10 with 7:32 remaining in the first half. After Desmond King II's 30-yard punt returns, Pierce carried the ball four times straight, accounting for all 41 yard of the drive.

With 1:48 remaining in the first period, Santos made a 50-yard field kick to reduce the deficit to 14-13. Fields' 24-yard completion to Kmet on 3rd, 9 to Kmet was the highlight of the Bears' 50-yard, 12-play drive. It was his first catch of this season. The Bears reached the 23, but Fields was sacked on 3rd and 6, for a loss 9 yards. This brought in the field goal unit.

Ka'imi Fairbairn kicked a 39 yard field goal on the opening drive of the second period to increase the lead to 17-13 for the Texans. Mills completed a 12-yard pass from Pierce to Mills, then a 25 yard pass to Akins to reach Bears 38. Pharaoh Brown was stopped by the Bears defense 2 yards short of the sticks on 3rd and 8. This brought up fourth down.

The Bears quickly regrouped and took a 20-17 lead with Herbert's 1-yard rush touchdown with 8:25 remaining in the third quarter. Herbert opened the 5-play, 75 yard drive with a 52 yard run down the left sideline. Fields found St. Brown and ran 20 yards to reach the 3. Herbert then reached the end zone with his third carry.

Houston tied the game at 20-20 with Fairbairn's 23 yard field goal with 54 seconds remaining in the third quarter. The Texans drove 70 yard on 14 plays to reach the 2, but linebackers RoquanSmith and Joe Thomas stopped Pierce from running, forcing the field goal team to leave. The Bears defense stopped Texans on 3rd & 1 to the earlier in the drive. However, the Texans executed a fake punt for the first down.

Eberflus stated that the play at the end of a game saw Blackson tipping the ball and Roquan having the concentration and focus to see the ball all the way in. "When it's below you waist, that's a difficult catch because the ground comes into view and you have to see all the way in. We worked together on that and he did an excellent job of focusing it in, taking us in, and setting us up for the game's winning field goal.
