Map: Caldor Fire prompts evacuation order in Sierra
A wildfire burning in rugged terrain has prompted evacuation orders southeast of Placerville.
The Caldor Fire was estimated at 6,500 acres on Tuesday morning — up from 2,261 on Monday evening, said the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. A perimeter map released later Tuesday indicated it was more than 10,000 acres.
The fire started on Saturday evening near the Middle Fork of the Cosumnes River about three miles south of Grizzly Flats. Firefighters have been hindered by steep hillsides and dense forest.
On Tuesday afternoon, the El Dorado County sheriff’s office ordered evacuations for the part of the town of Pollock Pines that is bounded by Sly Park Road, Highway 50, Ice House Road and Mormon Emigrant Trail.
Earlier orders covered these communities:
- Grizzly Flats
- Grizzly Flats Road between Somerset and Grizzly Flats
- Happy Valley
- Happy Valley Road between Sweeneys Crossing and Sciaroni
- Sly Park
- Leoni Meadows
- Caldor
- Dogtown Creek south of Caldor Road
- Barney Ridge east of Omo Ranch Road
- Omo Ranch Road to North South Road
- Pi-Pi Valley to Armstrong Hill
The evacuation center in Diamond Springs is full. Another has been opened at the community center at 2502 Country Club Drive in Cameron Park.
The fire is about three miles from the Amador County line, but it is growing in the opposite direction. All the warnings and orders so far are in El Dorado County.
