Emmitt Smith gives his thoughts on the Dallas Cowboys defense
Former Cowboy Emmitt Smith talks about Micah Parsons and Dallas' defense.
Sports Seriously
The Dallas Cowboys headed into Week 14, riding high on a two-game winning streak and looking to keep the positive momentum going. However, thanks to an embarrassing special teams blunder, they were unable to extend the streak to three.
Dallas' special teamer Nick Vigil blocked a Bengals punt before Cowboys defensive back Amani Oruwariye tried to pick up the ball, missed it, and allowed the Bengals to recover. From there, Cincinnati took advantage and scored a go-ahead touchdown to give them the 27-20 victory.

The Cowboys were led by quarterback Cooper Rush, who finished the game going 16-for-31 with 183 passing yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Dallas, as a team, finished with 322 yards of total offense and 17 first downs.
Cincinnati was led by quarterback Joe Burrow, finishing the game with 369 passing yards and three touchdowns on 33-of-4 attempts, while JaMarr Chase gained 177 yards on 14 receptions and two touchdowns, including the game-winner.
Joe Burrow and Co. came to Dallas looking to resurrect its playoff hopes and fight for its place in the playoff picture and walked out with their fifth win of the season while the Cowboys suffered their eighth loss, evening the two teams at 5-8 on the season.
Each franchise entered the 2024 season with high hopes, and now both head into their Week 14 matchup desperate for wins.
Cowboys vs. Bengals updates
The Cowboys defense did its job and forced a punt giving the offense a chance to go win the game with two minutes left in the game. However, Dallas' special teams unit makes an unconscionable mistake by touching a previously blocked punt which the Bengals recovered. From there, Cincy took advantage and scored a go-ahead touchdown, 27-20.
Following Dallas regaining the lead to open the final quarter, the Bengals drove down the field with relative ease before stalling out on the Cowboys' 12-yard line. York punches through another field goal to tie the game at 20-20.
Aided by Rico Dowdle's second-consecutive game with 100 rushing yards, the Cowboys have been able to find a rhythm on offense in the second half. However, a 15-yard personal foul from tight end Luke Schoonmaker stalled the drive, forcing Dallas to settle for a 47-yard Brandon Aubrey field goal, giving them the 20-17 lead to open the final quarter.
The Cowboys offense comes out of the halftime break on fire and march down the field for an eight-play, 70-yard drive, punctuated by a three-yard touchdown pass to Brandin Cooks to tie the game 17-17.
Following the Cowboys going three-and-out on, the Bengals extended their lead to seven with a 37-yard Cade York field goal.
The Cowboys' defense held up well for much of the first half, limiting the Bengals to only one touchdown late into the second quarter. Despite that, Cincinnati was able to break through for its second score of the night and take its first lead with a 19-yard touchdown pass from Burrow to running back Chase Brown, 14-10.
The Cowboys have been able to move the football well, both through the air and on the ground, thus far, getting into the red zone on all three possessions. But their second drive was capped off by a bad decision interception by Rush, while the third was capped by a 35-yard field goal by Brandon Aubrey to give them a 10-7 lead.
Despite going three-and-out in their first offensive drive and following behind 7-0, the Bengals were able to match the Cowboys with an 11-play, 70-yard drive capped by a 5-yard touchdown pass from Joe Burrow to JaMarr Chase.
It has been rare for the Cowboys to find offensive success in the first quarter and the first possession specifically. However, that trend was bucked tonight against the Bengals, as they put together a nine-play, 60-yard drive that was finished by an 11-yard touchdown pass from Cooper Rush to CeeDee Lamb on fourth down to take an early 7-0 lead.
