The Gunners were overwhelmingly dominant in the first half, out-shooting the Reds 13-2 (5-0 on target) and racking up 1.29 xG (to Liverpool’s 0.1), but they missed three chances wide of the goal from inside the six-yard box while Martin Odegaard smashed the crossbar with their next-best look.

Liverpool came out the more adventurous side in the second half, though, and Jurgen Klopp’s men were eventually rewarded for their desire to chase the tie away from home. It was a deliciously delivered free kick from Trent Alexander-Arnold that finally broke the deadlock in the 80th minute. The ball floated and curled its way deep into the six at the near post, where Arsenal defender Jakub Kiwior rose highest to meet it but redirected it past Aaron Ramsdale for the opening goal.

1-0 looked like the final scoreline until the final few seconds of stoppage time, when Diogo Jota rolled the ball on to Luis Diaz just inside the penalty area. Diaz took a touch toward goal and fired an unstoppable arrow into the top-right corner of Ramsdale’s goal.
