Yankees' Aaron Boone not ruling out batting Anthony Volpe leadoff ...
When the Yankees finish out their opening series with the San Francisco Giants on Sunday afternoon in the Bronx, shortstop Anthony Volpe will find himself in a familiar spot in the batting order. The 21-year-old has been penciled in ninth in the lineup in all three of his big-league starts.
But speaking with the media on Sunday morning, Aaron Boone explained that he considered batting Volpe leadoff with DJ LeMahieu getting the day off. Ultimately, though, the Yankees skipper wants to see Volpe get his feet a bit more wet before making a move.
For now.
“Considered it, yes. But I do want to get him a little more settled [in the nine-hole],” Boone explained. “That said, I have a ton of confidence in wherever I put him. I do want him to get settled, and in the nine-hole I just think with his ability to control the zone and get on base, which I think he’s going to do, and obviously the running portion ahead of the top of our lineup, I think it’s a really good spot for him right now. But I wouldn’t necessarily hesitate to move him in that [leadoff] spot.
“I expect DJ to be in there most days when he’s going. Obviously DJ with the day off today, so it would be kind of a one-off thing. There will be a time and a place for that.”
With LeMahieu out of the lineup, Boone elected to have Gleyber Torres hit leadoff, keeping Volpe at the bottom of the order.
Since winning the starting shortstop job over fellow highly touted prospect Oswald Peraza and incumbent veteran Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Volpe has already endeared himself with Yankees fans, recording his first two major league hits in Saturday’s loss to the Giants.
The sample size is obviously very limited, but Volpe is slashing .333/.429/.333 with a run scored and two stolen bases through two games.
For the time being, Volpe is staying put at the tail end of the Bombers’ batting order, but it certainly sounds like there will be a day when he gets his shot to get things started from the leadoff spot.
