Statement by President Joe Biden on Yom Kippur
Yom Kippur is an important and solemn event for Jewish communities in the United States and all over the globe. This holy day is when Jews gather to fast, reflect, repent, and take stock of the past year. They also seek forgiveness and resolve to do better in the coming year. Our hearts are with all Americans affected by Hurricane Ian on this Yom Kippur. We are especially concerned for those whose synagogues have been closed and who will have no one to support them.
Yom Kippur's core message is that everyone is capable of growth and improvement. Each of us has a role to play not only in healing the wounds we’ve inflicted on others, but in repairing the rifts in our communities, our country, and our world. Let us all use these Days of Awe to confront the injustices and inhumanity in this world and resolve to do our part in repairing what is broken.
Jill and me wish a fast that is meaningful and easy for all Yom Kippur-observers in the U.S., Israel and around the globe. G’mar Chatimah Tovah—may we all be sealed in the Book of Life.
