Wrexham Promoted Again, As Storybook Reynolds, McElhenney ...
Welsh soccer club Wrexham AFC got its Hollywood ending last year with its promotion to the English Football League, the fourth tier of English soccer. The sequel was just as good, as Wrexham secured back-to-back promotions with a 6-0 win over Forest Green on Saturday.
The club owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney will play in League One next season, two tiers below the Premier League.
It is the first time Wrexham has achieved back-to-back promotions in its 159-year history. It last played in the third tier of English soccer during the 2004-05 season.
Wrexham is second in League Two with two games to go. The top three teams are automatically promoted to League One, and the fourth-place club MK Dons can no longer finish ahead of Wrexham.
In November 2020, Reynolds and McElhenney reached an agreement to buy Wrexham. Its fan base has bulged thanks in large part to their Welcome to Wrexham docuseries, which debuted in August 2022 on FX and Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ in the UK.
Last month, Wrexham reported financial results for the 2022-23 season. Revenue soared 75% to $13 million for the year, and up from the typical $2 million to $4 million before the Hollywood stars bought the club.
Losses also jumped, but he team said these losses would not be repeated and that it now generates enough income to cover operational costs.
“These losses were deemed necessary to allow the Club to maximize its full potential in the shortest time practically possible,” the club said in a statement.
The team expects “significantly” higher revenue for the 2023-24 season after its promotion, and it looks like 2024-25 will be another big bump.
