The United States opens its 2022-23 CONCACAF Nations League slate with a group stage match against Grenada in Austin, Texas.

The USA opens 2022-23 CONCACAF Nations League play on Friday with a home game against Caribbean nation Grenada at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas.

With a pair of solid results in two World Cup tuneup friendlies against Morocco and Uruguay under their belt, the Americans enter the regional competition as defending champions. Their title defense begins with a mismatch as the 15th-ranked U.S. team start as a massive favorite against the 170th-ranked Spice Boys from Grenada.

The match offers U.S. manager Gregg Berhalter the opportunity to sprinkle in a few changes to the squad, while still keeping in mind that chemistry between starting-caliber players is of critical importance ahead of the 2022 World Cup. With five months remaining until the Qatar tournament, national team minutes are at a premium no matter the opponent.

The USMNT has played Grenada three times previously, with three victories by a combined 10-2 scoreline. The last was a 2009 Gold Cup group stage match that saw the United States win 4-0 led by four different goalscorers, including Freddy Adu and Stu Holden. The game was Holden's first international cap and resulted in his first international goal.

USA vs. Grenada projected lineups

It remains to be seen whether Berhalter will use a first-choice lineup or rotate the squad. But given the World Cup is on the horizon, the starting XI will likely trend towards the former. That is aided by the fact that the U.S. to this point has remained injury-free through the international break thus far, allowing full squad availability for Berhalter to select from. And there are lots of questions to answer in a home match against an inferior opponent.

Players who could be rested include those who started in both previous friendlies this window, such as Walker ZimmermanChristian PulisicTim Weah, Yunus Musah, and Tyler Adams. Nobody has played the full 90 minutes in both games, but Musah and Adams have come close. Pulisic, meanwhile, could use some rest after a grueling club season that saw his Chelsea side go deep in multiple competitions with another jam-packed club season on the horizon.

Instead, there could be moments for fringe players to earn a spot on the World Cup roster. Players who could be tested include Jordan Morris and Cristian Roldan, as the two Seattle Sounders teammates did not see the field in the previous two friendlies. Paul Arriola could be another, after the FC Dallas winger played the final 45 minutes against Uruguay and had good moments.

It also could be a chance for a center-back battle, with Aaron Long impressing in the first two friendlies this window, while Erik Palmer-Brown, also in the mix for a World Cup spot, struggled against Uruguay's first-choice players.

Finally, it may be a time for Berhalter to experiment. If Weah does not sit, could Berhalter play him at the striker position given the lack of recent production from more natural players at that position? Or, will Berhalter give yet another opportunity for winger Brenden Aaronson to play in midfield, after impressing there in both prior friendlies?

USA projected starting lineup (4-3-3): Turner (GK) — A. Robinson, Palmer-Brown, Long, Cannon — Aaronson, Adams, McKennie  — Morris, Weah, Pulisic.

Grenada's 2-2 draw with El Salvador on Tuesday was a rare result for the tiny island nation of just over 100,000 people. You have to go back to March of 2021 for the country's last victory, coming via a 1-0 scoreline against the U.S. Virgin Islands in the early stages of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying. Grenada nearly ended that streak on Tuesday, but Cristian Gil scored an 88th minute equalizer to dash those dreams.

The team has a significant amount of young talent on the roster, with eight players 22 years old or younger, including 19-year-old Charleston Battery defender Benjamin Ettienne who has seven caps already, including a 90-minute performance at right back in the draw with El Salvador just days ago.

As a result, however, there's very little goalscoring experience in the squad. The team's leading goalscorer on the roster is Real Sociedad striker Jamal Charles with 14 international goals in 28 games. No, not that Real Sociedad, the one in El Salvador known as CD Real Sociedad de Tocoa.

In that same vein, they have 18-year-old Queens Park Rangers defender Kayden Harrack in the squad, and 19-year-old Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper Trishawn Thomas. No, they're not teammates...Harrack plays for that QPR in England, while Thomas plays for Queens Park Rangers SC domestically in Grenada. Harrack went the distance at center back against El Salvador, but could be replaced by the more experienced A.J Paterson.

There's a host of U.S. lower-league squads represented in the Grenada squad, including the two aforementioned sites, plus fellow USL Championship sides Indy Eleven Colorado Springs Switchbacks, and El Paso Locomotive, as well as USL League Two clubs Peachtree City and Westchester Flames.

Grenada projected starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Belfon (GK) — Paterson, Paterson, Sterling, Ettienne — Theodore, Charles — John-Brown, Berkeley-Agyepong, Frank — Charles.

USA vs. Grenada betting pick & prediction

Odds via FanDuel (USA)

Because the match has such lopsided projections, many sportsbooks don't even offer odds on this game. Even the ones that do aren't allowing bets on a United States moneyline, just a Grenada raw win.

In line with that thinking, the spread is a four-goal margin, which in international soccer world is a high bar to clear, even against lower-level sides, considering the heavy underdog that will bunker and deploy an incredibly conservative tactical approach.

Even the over/under is inflated to incredible proportions, only finding a somewhat even split at the outlandish total of 5.5 goals.

It's easy to see just how favored the United States is in a home match against a team with considerably less talent that is also raw.
