Premier League clash between Liverpool and Man United will go
Sunday's Premier League game between Liverpool and Manchester United will go ahead as planned, despite earlier fears that snow could force its cancellation.

The Premier League encounter between leaders Liverpool and Manchester United will go ahead as planned after fears that heavy snow could postpone the game.

Snow blanketed the north-west on Saturday and Sunday, with amber warnings for snow and freezing rain in place for large parts of Wales and England, including Liverpool and Manchester.

The decision has been made to proceed with Sunday's game, which is scheduled to kick off at Anfield at 16:30 UK time.

Liverpool City Council's Safety Advisory Group met at 09:00 to discuss the conditions and reconvened at midday to make a final decision on whether it was safe to play or not.

"Today’s fixture against Manchester United will go ahead as planned," Liverpool FC announced at midday.

"Two safety meetings were held earlier to assess the weather and travel conditions.

"We thank everyone involved in helping us to get this game on today. If you’re travelling to Anfield then please take extra care. We look forward to seeing you there."

Manchester United also posted, saying, "There have been snowfall and weather warnings across the North West on Sunday but it has been deemed safe for fans to attend the 16:30 GMT kick-off."

Both Manchester and Liverpool John Lennon airports closed their runways this morning due to the heavy snowfall, causing travel chaos in the north-west, with Manchester Airport reopening its runways shortly before 10:00.

Snow has disrupted games elsewhere, with two League Two clashes - Chesterfield v Gillingham and Fleetwood v AFC Wimbledon - called off.

The decision to go ahead with the Liverpool-United game may be better news for one side than the other. United are languishing 14th in the league, just seven points above the relegation zone, and on the back of four straight defeats in all competitions, while Liverpool are in fine form and five points clear at the top of the table.
