What to make of the deal

This is basically the same contract that Las Vegas gave Meyers — one that the Pats weren’t willing to match for Meyers. So it tells you that Bill Belichick sees more value in Smith-Schuster than Meyers, the receiver Belichick helped turn into the team’s top playmaker. Both players are 26, they commanded almost identical contracts, they both play primarily in the slot — and yet Belichick chose Smith-Schuster over Meyers. — Graff

What’s next for the Patriots?

This is a meaningful first step for a Patriots offense that needs playmakers, but this can’t be the only move. The Patriots still have a need at wide receiver even with Smith-Schuster in the fold. They’ve got plenty of cap space and 11 draft picks. Are they willing to use that on a trade for someone like DeAndre Hopkins or Jerry Jeudy? If so, Smith-Schuster is a really good No. 2 receiver. If not, the Pats could enter next season without a meaningful upgrade at wide receiver. — Graff
