Australia becomes first to ban children under 16 from having social media

Users of Facebook, Instagram and other social media apps owned by Meta were having problems with them on Wednesday, according to trends reported by outage tracker Downdetector.
Parent company Meta said in a statement on X, "We're aware that a technical issue is impacting some users' ability to access our apps. We're working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and apologize for any inconvenience."
Mid-afternoon, tens of thousands of people were having problems, according to Downdetector graphics.
Some were reporting on X that Messenger and Threads were also affected.
But it wasn't immediately known if the issues were around the country, global or affecting one region or another. It wasn't known whether Lower Hudson Valley users had been affected or not.
USA TODAY reported Wednesday that Downdetector showed big spikes for Instagram with 70,000 outage reports above average and Facebook, which had over 100,000 outage reports, WhatsApp Messenger was showing more than 10,000 reports of outages.
