Saquon Barkley has big game vs Giants; Jalen Carter on Eagles' 8 sacks

Saquon Barkley describes the emotion of having a big game against his former team, while Jalen Carter on the defense's strong game.

CINCINNATI − All things considered, the Eagles gladly took a 10-10 tie with the Cincinnati Bengals at halftime as Jalen Hurts scored from the 1 yard line with 22 seconds left in the second quarter.

Then they opened the second half and buried the Bengals as Hurts accounted for 4 touchdowns (3 rushing) and the defense clamped down on Joe Burrow and the Bengals for a 37-17 win Sunday.

It was the Eagles' third straight win and they won in Cincinnati for the first time ever, going back to 1971. The Eagles were 0-4-1 before Sunday.

Early on, the defense couldn't stop Burrow and the Bengals offense. And the Eagles continued their drought by not scoring in the first quarter, but they did end one drought by finally scoring on their first possession.

Confused?

Well, the Eagles defense allowed Burrow and the Bengals offense to go on an opening drive that lasted 10 minutes, 4 seconds.

CLIMBING THE CHARTS: Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts moves up all-time rushing TD list

By the time the offense touched the ball, there was 4:50 left in the quarter. The Eagles ended up with a field goal on the drive, but not before the first quarter ended. Jake Elliott connected from 39 out with 14:10 left in the second quarter.

But the Eagles couldn't slow Bengals QB Joe Burrow. He completed 11 of his 12 passes on the opening drive and went 16-for-24 for 169 yards in the first half. The Bengals converted their first 7 third-down opportunities.

Still, the Eagles managed to tie the game by holding the ball for just about all of the final 5 minutes, 8 seconds of the first half as Hurts scored on a tush push with 22 seconds left.

That turned out to be the Eagles' best defense as the Bengals used all of their timeouts on that drive. Hurts' 19-yard pass to Grant Calcaterra got the Eagles to the Bengals' 29. Then on 3rd-and-16 from the 33, Hurts hit A.J. Brown for 17 yards, eventually setting up the TD.

Hurts was 7 of 11 for 86 yards while Brown had 3 catches for 55 yards. Saquon Barkley had 35 yards on 9 carries.

The Eagles defense turned it around in the second half, allowing only one touchdown. But the Eagles stopped the Bengals on a 4th-and-1 from Cincinnati's 39 as Ja'Marr Chase lost 2 yards on a pass into the flat.

Then CJ Gardner-Johnson intercepted Burrow, who was trying to hit Chase deep early in the fourth quarter. Isaiah Rodgers had coverage and tipped the pass to Gardner. It was only the Eagles' third takeaway this season, the lowest in the NFL.

DeVonta Smith goes deep, Eagles regain lead, 24-17

It had been a frustrating day for DeVonta Smith. He had just 3 catches for 24 yards before he hauled in a 45-yard pass from Jalen Hurts with 2:43 left in the third quarter. Smith had just 1 catch for minus-2 yards as well.

So Smith was quite ecstatic when he caught the ball over the Bengals' Jordan Battle.

The Eagles took the opening kickoff and marched 70 yards down the field. Hurts completed a 15-yard pass to DeVonta Smith, then for 28 yards to Grant Calcaterra down to the Bengals' 22.

Hurts capped the drive with a 7-yard QB keeper. That gave Hurts 47 career touchdowns, second only to Steve Van Buren's 69.

The Eagles continued their first-quarter scoreless streak to 7 games, but it wasn't entirely the offense's fault. That's because the Bengals had a 10:04 drive to start the game. The Eagles touched the ball for the first time with 4:50 left, and immediately drove down the field.

They reached the Bengals' 16 with a minute left in the quarter, but the period ended after a holding penalty. The Eagles settled for a 39-yard field goal with 14:10 left in the 2nd quarter.

The Eagles did end one drought: It's the first time they scored on an opening drive this season.

ESPN reported that the Eagles have not scored in 8 straight 1st quarters going back to 2023, tied for the longest streak in the last 5 seasons.

The Bengals took the opening kickoff and methodically moved down the field. They drove 70 yards in 17 plays using up 10 minutes, 4 seconds. Joe Burrow capped the drive with a 2-yard TD pass to Ja'Marr Chase. In all, Burrow was 11-for-12 for 60 yards on the drive.

The Bengals also converted all 5 of their third-down attempts.

The Eagles had already ruled out tight end Dallas Goedert, who's missing his second straight game with a hamstring injury, and right guard Mekhi Becton, who's out with a concussion. Tyler Steen will start in place of Becton.

The other inactives are QB Tanner McKee, CB Eli Ricks and G Trevor Keegan.

That means rookie WR Ainias Smith, just activated off injured reserve, is on the game-day roster.

The Bengals will be without one of their star wide receivers in Tee Higgins, who apparently suffered a quad injury in practice Friday. Higgins had 341 yards in five games. The Bengals do have Ja'Marr Chase, who leads the NFL with 620 yards receiving.

Brown vs Brown brothers matchup

One fascinating subplot of the Eagles' game against the Bengals on Sunday is the possibility of Eagles safety Sydney Brown tackling his identical twin brother, Bengals running back Chase Brown.

It didn't happen in the first half s Sydney Brown didn't get in during the first half.

The two have never played against each other before. They grew up in London, Ontario, Canada, went to high school in Bradenton, Florida, then ended up in college together at Illinois.

At Illinois, the two would go against each other in offense-defense drills, until the coaches put a stop to that.

"That’s the competitive nature we have with each other and the kind of relationship we have with one another," Sydney Brown said. "That has pushed us to where we are now."

Eagles vs Bengals prediction

In one of those fascinating scheduling quirks, the last two opponents for both the Eagles and Bengals were the Giants and Browns. Both teams went 2-0. The Eagles won by a combined score of 48-19 and the Bengals by 38-21. I see the Eagles' offense as a hair better.

The pick: Eagles 34, Bengals 29
