Warriors predicted to snag sevenfooter former No 9 overall pick
Golden State could fulfill a need at center in a big way by placing a call to the Toronto Raptors.

There's still time for the Golden State Warriors to improve before the trade deadline, even if that doesn't mean bringing in a superstar.

A month or two ago, Golden State dreamed about guys like LeBron James, Kevin Durant, or even Giannis Antetokounmpo forsaking their own franchises to come team up with Stephen Curry for an epic Finals run.

It turns out the Warriors were being more idealistic than realistic in those ambitions, although in Golden State's defense, any of those pairings would have been splendid to witness from a basketball fan's perspective.

With around three weeks to go until the trade deadline, it's time for Warriors GM Mike Dunleavy to put on his practical hat and get a deal done that at least marginally improves the roster around Curry.

How about bringing in an impact center with size, something Golden State has seldom had in the Curry era?

Bleacher Report's Greg Swartz proposed an interesting idea along those lines for the Warriors on Monday.

According to Swartz, Dunleavy should package Moses Moody and two expiring contracts (Kevon Looney and Gary Payton II), call up the Toronto Raptors, and ask about seven-foot center Jakob Poeltl.

Would the Raptors be interested? Swartz believes so, even if they'd also have to include Garrett Temple in the deal with Poeltl to make the money work.

“The lottery-bound Raptors should try to sell high on Poeltl at the deadline, as the 29-year-old is having a solid year (15.1 points, 10.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.2 steals, 1.2 blocks),” Swartz said.

“Moving him to the Warriors for some young talent and expiring contracts would help with Toronto's rebuild. Moody, 22, just hasn't found the minutes to blossom on a veteran Golden State team yet is shooting a career-high 39.0 percent from three and putting up 17.7 points per 36 minutes of play.”

“Both Looney and Payton are on expiring deals and could be re-routed to a third team or just used to take money off the books this summer.”

Poeltl, 29, was selected at No. 9 overall by the Toronto Raptors in the 2016 NBA draft. He spent time with the San Antonio Spurs between 2018 and 2023 before returning to Toronto.

Poeltl is a starter-level center in the NBA who would make a huge difference for the Dubs. He's also slightly cheaper than one of Golden State's other possible targets at center, Nic Claxton.

He's not Giannis, but Poeltl in a Warriors uniform would represent a positive trade deadline for Dunleavy and Golden State's front office.
