Briefly About the Europa League
48 European club clubs participate in the UEFA Europa League throughout six rounds with the chance to be named champions and secure an automatic berth in the UEFA Champions League the following season.
The UEFA Europa League has established itself as an exciting and competitive substitute for European teams unable to qualify for the UEFA Champions League since its debut.
Tournament Format and how Standings are Formed
Each team ousted from Champions League qualifying receives a second opportunity at European participation by being included in the Europa League qualification process, aside from the teams that qualify directly for the Europa League. The six Champions League play-off round losers are automatically sent to the group stage of the Europa League.
The complete list of the 48 qualified teams is provided below:
- 17 teams that, thanks to their association and club coefficients, automatically advance to the group stage.
- From the UEL qualifying procedure, 21 teams.
- Six losers from the fourth qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League.
- Four losers of the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round who did not win a domestic cup.
How the Europa League Results are Decided
The teams are ranked according to the group stage points they earned. A victory results in three points, a draw results in one point, and a defeat results in no points. According to UEFA, head-to-head and away rules are applied to decide the ranking if teams are deadlocked on points scored.
Except for the championship match, teams were partnered for each round of the knockout round, playing two games at their respective stadiums.
The away goals rule is used if the combined score after both legs is the same.
After the additional 30 minutes are up, if the score is still tied, the game goes to a penalty shootout.
If the score is tied at the end of regulation time in the final (which is played as a single match in a neutral venue), extra time is played. There is then a penalty shootout if the score is still tied.
