Ridley Scott's 'The Last Duel' Is Now On HBO Max

As the temperatures drop and COVID-19 cases rise higher than ever, why not stay inside and catch up on recent movies? Plenty of 2021 theatrical releases are finally available on streaming platforms at no additional cost, such as Ridley Scott‘s historical drama The Last Duel. The film, which stars Matt Damon, Jodie Comer, Ben Affleck, and Adam Driver, has arrived on HBO Max just in time for a weekend movie night.

Based on Eric Jager’s 2004 book of the same name, The Last Duel tells the true story of a 14th century trial by combat between French knight Jean de Carrouges (Damon) and squire Jacques Le Gris (Driver), the latter of whom is accused of raping the former’s wife. A warning for potential viewers: The movie includes multiple depictions of sexual assault, so proceed with caution.

The Last Duel debuted to largely positive reviews. Decider‘s John Serba gave the film a “Stream It” recommendation, writing, “The Last Duel is highly watchable, with entertaining performances by its male stars counterbalanced by Comer’s spirited performance. It’s also a tonal hodgepodge, but that’s not enough to dissuade you from giving it a shot.

Although The Last Duel is technically a Disney film (since the company owns 20th Century Fox), don’t expect to see it on the House of Mouse’s streamer anytime soon. Instead, the film is available on HBO Max during its “Pay 1 window,” aka the time period in which premium cable channels have exclusive rights to play it. This is because Disney is bound to a 10-year deal between 20th Century Fox and HBO that was signed in 2012.

So if you’re in the mood to watch a cathartic medieval tale with some of the wildest hairstyles in recent film memory, HBO Max has got you covered.
