Thanos' Father Paid The Ultimate Price For Creating The Mad Titan

Marvel Comics just revealed that Thanos' birthfather Mentor suffered a dire fate after he was put in exclusion for trying to prove Eternals could create life. In Eternals: Thanos Rises #1, the Mad Titan's father is reprimanded for his actions that led to the creation of his son, as he's forced to watch each murder Thanos commits as he wastes away in a prison specifically built for Eternals.

Thanos has always had a rocky relationship with his father, Mentor, and his mother, Sui-San - and for a good reason. After giving birth to a son, Eros, the couple's second child was born with the Deviant gene, leading to Sui-San to try to kill Thanos as a baby. Unfortunately, Thanos grew up to be one of the Eternals' greatest enemies. In Kieron Gillen, Esad Ribic, and Matthew Wilson's current Eternals run, he made it his personal quest to kill everyone looked down on him. Now, readers learned what happened to Mentor after Thanos killed him.

In Eternals: Thanos Rises #1 by Kieron Gillen, Dustin Weaver, Matthew Wilson, and Esad Ribic, Mentor's journey to prove that the Eternals could recreate and have traditional families is revealed. The Eternal is given a chance to stop the Civil War between the ancient race and prove they didn't always need the Great Machine to create life. Ultimately, the plan backfires. Despite falling in love and marrying a warrior named Sui-San, Mentor quickly learns creating life naturally was a mistake - as it leads to the rise of Thanos. After being brutally murdered by his son, Mentor reawakens in the Machine - where he's sentenced to exclusion.

After telling the Eternals his mission failed, Ikaris explains he can't be reset by the Great Machine as his very nature led to his exclusion, not his ideas. Mentor is locked away in a cell next to Sui-San. Inside the bright containment room, Mentor learns that the black walls will project a white pixel for each time Thanos extinguishes a life. Quickly, Mentor sees further proof creating life was a mistake, as the wall becomes entirely white - eventually burning out his eyes.

Mentor paid the ultimate price for his attempts to prove the Eternals could create life naturally. Not only did his mission lead to the creation of Thanos, but his failure led him to an exclusion where he was notified via white pixels of the Mad Titan's murders as they happened. Hopefully, Thanos never finds out his parents are still alive in the Eternals containment; otherwise, it might spell the end of the world.
