Jets vs. Steelers score, takeaways: Zach Wilson, New York rally late to spoil Kenny Pickett's rookie debut

PITTSBURGH -- With the Jets trailing by 20 points, it seemed that the Jets would be eliminated as the Kenny Pickett era officially began in Pittsburgh. The Jets won a dramatic 24-20 victory. This was their second late-game rally after three weeks. The Steelers dropped to 1-3, their third consecutive loss in three weeks. 

The comeback began when Zach Wilson, making his season debut, hit Corey Davis for a five yard score with 7:41 remaining. Pickett was then picked off by Michael Carter on Pittsburgh's next possession. With 16 seconds remaining, Breece Hall scored a one-yard win with the pick. 

Wilson and New York's comeback were fuelled by Wilson and a defense which came up with three picks for Pickett, who was replaced by Mitch Trubisky at halftime. Wilson threw for 252 yards and also caught his first touchdown of his career to give the Jets an early lead of 10-0. 

Here's a closer look into what happened in Pittsburgh. 

New York made the big plays in the final seconds of the game. Pickett hit George Pickens with a 26-yard touchdown, which put Carter's pick on the Jets' 31 yard line. New York capitalized after Wilson made several clutch throws, including an eight-yard gain for Tyler Conklin on a third-and-6 play. 

The Steelers are now 1-3, their worst record since 2019. New York scored 10 points thanks to Pittsburgh's two turnovers. Despite interceptions by Minkah Fitzpatrick and Cam Sutton, the Steelers lost in the turnover battle. While they were strong for most of the game Pittsburgh's defense surrendered two late scores. They also managed to get Wilson one sack despite being relentlessly pressured in the second-year quarter. 

After Pickett entered, Pittsburgh had all the momentum. The Steelers took the lead with Pickett's first touchdown run, following Fitzpatrick’s interception. Pickett's second touchdown run, which was a 12-play,-82-yard drive, gave the Steelers a 10 point lead with 13:36 remaining. Carter's pick turned the game upside down and re-energized the Jets. 

Wilson's touchdown catch was the result a perfectly executed play. After receiving the ball, Garrett Wilson handed it back to Berrios. Berrios took a few steps before he passed to Wilson. Wilson completed the play by performing "The Griddy", in the Steelers' endzone. 

The Steelers will travel down to Buffalo to take on the Bills. This is the third consecutive year that the Steelers have played at Buffalo. In 2020, Pittsburgh lost a game in Buffalo. The Steelers won in Week 1. 

New York will host the Dolphins team, which is coming off its first loss of 2022 season. In recent weeks, the team has been under intense scrutiny for its handling regarding Tua Tagovailoa's medical issues. Although Tagovailoa is not officially out of the picture, it is expected that the Dolphins will start Teddy Bridgewater, a former Pro Bowl quarterback, for next Sunday's game against New York Jets.
