Texas-based airline Southwest Airlines announced Monday that it was laying off a significant portion of its staff.

Southwest Airlines said it will cut 1,750 jobs at its Dallas Love Field headquarters, representing about 15% of its corporate workforce. Among these layoffs, 11 senior leadership roles have been eliminated due to restructuring.

Here is what we know about the job cuts.

Why is Southwest Airlines cutting jobs?

According to their press release, the company anticipates completing the layoffs largely by the end of the second quarter, resulting in projected savings of $210 million this year and $300 million for the full year of 2026.

In the press release, President, Chief Executive Officer & Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors Bob Jordan said the firings weren't an easy choice.

"This decision is unprecedented in our 53-year history, and change requires that we make difficult decisions. We are at a pivotal moment as we transform Southwest Airlines into a leaner, faster, and more agile organization," he said.

"I arrived at this decision thoughtfully and carefully, knowing how hard it will be to say goodbye to colleagues who have been a significant part of our Southwest Culture and accomplishments. I'm grateful to all Southwest Employees who have shared in our legendary history and to those that will guide us into the next era of Southwest Airlines."

Will this affect Southwest Airlines customers?

Southwest's announcement didn't mention any potential effects on customers. However, since layoffs target corporate and leadership positions rather than ticket agents, flight attendants, pilots, or ground crews, flight operations at Dallas Love Field and other airports should remain unaffected.
