Newcastle beat 10-man Southampton 1-0 in a chaotic first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final, taking a slender advantage home to St James' Park for next week's decisive second leg.

Eddie Howe's side enjoyed the better of the chances in the first half. Joelinton appeared to open the scoring in the 39th minute, poking the ball home from close range, but the goal was disallowed for a handball. Replays showed it was challenging to discern whether ball hit his arm or his chest.

Joelinton was in central to the action again in the 53rd minute, missing a wide-open net from point-blank range.

Southampton eventually responded to Newcastle's pressure, as Che Adams forced two fantastic saves from Nick Pope after the hour mark.

The visitors finally broke through in the 73rd minute, as Joelinton (who else?) finally found the back of the net, firing home a brilliant cross by Alexander Isak.

Nathan Jones' men appeared to equalise just two minutes later, as former Newcastle player Adam Armstrong bundled the ball home, the VAR disallowed the goal for a handball.

The home side's misery was compounded in the 86th minute, as Duje Caleta-Car was shown a second yellow card for a tactical foul on Allan Saint-Maximin.

Newcastle are well positioned to advance to February's final in search of their first trophy since 1955.
