Grand Blanc students disciplined for ‘inappropriate, offensive’ Snapchat messages

A group of student athletes have been disciplined by the Grand Blanc Community Schools district for “inappropriate” and “offensive” messages in a group chat.

GRAND BLANC, MI – A group of student athletes have been disciplined by the Grand Blanc Community Schools district for “inappropriate” and “offensive” messages in a group chat.

The students are not facing criminal charges or investigation, but the school resource officer was involved in a school investigation while they were disciplined as a violation of the GBHS student and athletic handbook, according to statements from the district and police.

Despite their actions not taking place during either school or athletic activities, the students are still subject to discipline, according to the handbook.

Specific disciplinary actions were not specified by the district. Discipline can include suspension, loss of privileges to compete in athletics and even expulsion.

“As we continue to work with our district’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) team, we will be extending that work to our student-athletes through the athletic department this year,” the district wrote in a statement. “We take the duty to maintain a safe environment for all of our students very seriously, including during extracurricular activities. It’s important that our student-athletes represent themselves, our school, their peers and teammates, and their families with dignity and respect online and in real life. Participating is a privilege.”

ABC12 reported the students were sending Snapchat messages that included “Hitler salutes” and “Hitler mustaches,” along with “KKK hoodies” and a “profane message directed at President Joe Biden.”

Grand Blanc Detective Sgt. Bryan Byarski confirmed that information to MLive-The Flint Journal.

Byarski said the school resource officer was involved in the investigation to educate students on the dangers of posting things that could be interpreted badly.
