Kylian Mbappé had a night to remember as he put three past Manchester City in the Champions League. Check out the best facts and Opta data from the game with our Real Madrid vs Man City stats page.

Kylian Mbappé scored a hat-trick to see Real Madrid comfortably past Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League knockout phase play-off, with the La Liga giants winning the second leg at the Santiago Bernabéu 3-1, securing a 6-3 aggregate victory.

Nico González pulled a goal back late on but it was a chastening night for City, who also lost John Stones to injury early on.

Erling Haaland was an unused substitute after coming off injured against Newcastle United at the weekend, and he had to watch from the sideline as Mbappé tore City to shreds.

As for Carlo Ancelotti’s men, they will face either Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen or neighbours Atlético Madrid in the last 16, with the draw being made on Friday.

It took less than four minutes for Madrid to go ahead on the night, with Mbappé the man to strike. Some patient passing around the back ultimately led to Raúl Asencio hitting a long pass over the top for the Frenchman to chase, and he muscled City defenders out of the way before lobbing Ederson. At 3 minutes, 35 seconds, it was the earliest City had conceded in the Champions League since October 2018 vs Hoffenheim (43 seconds).

To make matters worse, Stones came off injured for City immediately after, replaced by Nathan Aké.

Mbappé had his second in the 33rd minute as Madrid this time picked City apart inside their half with a move that ended with Rodrygo playing the striker in. Mbappé cut inside and finished past Ederson with ease once more.

City had just one shot in the first half; their fewest in an opening period of a Champions League match since March 2017 vs Monaco (0).

Mbappé almost had a hat-trick less than 13 minutes into the second half when Federico Valverde put in a low cross, but Ederson blocked well. He didn’t have to wait long, though.

His third arrived on the hour, with Mbappé cutting inside Phil Foden on the right and slotting with his left foot from outside the box into the far corner.

The game was largely played out with a calm feeling of being over from there, though City did pull a goal back in stoppage time when González tapped into an empty net following Omar Marmoush’s free-kick that struck the crossbar.

It was very much too little too late, though, as City’s European adventures are over for another year, while Real Madrid and Kylian Mbappé very much march on.
