Mbappé hat-trick sends Madrid into Champions League last 16

Real Madrid booked their place in the last 16 of the Champions League. The Whites followed up the impressive performance in the first leg by overwhelming Manchester City at the Bernabéu. In just over half an hour, Ancelotti’s side had effectively settled the tie with a stunning double from Mbappé. The Frenchman's display was not over, however, as he notched his second hat-trick as a Madridista in the second half. The European champions now wait to see whether they will face Atlético or Bayer Leverkusen in Friday's draw.

Real Madrid made the best possible start to the contest, taking the lead after just four minutes. Asencio sent a defence-splitting pass over the top and Mbappé produced a first-time lob over Ederson from the edge of the area to make it 1-0. This was the fourth consecutive match in which the Frenchman has found the back of the net. Real Madrid were now two goals in front after the 2-3 first leg, but they dominated the game and almost extended their lead on the quarter-hour mark. Rodrygo swung in a corner and Bellingham's near post header flew across the six-yard box and narrowly missed the back post. Watch all the videos from the game on RM Play

As the minutes passed, the chances continued to flow for the home side, who were rarely troubled at the back. In the 29th minute, Tchouameni delightfully played in Mbappé who once again got the better of the defence, but this time he slammed his shot straight at Ederson. This was merely a warning of the Frenchman's spectacular form, and four minutes later he grabbed his second. Rodrygo’s superb pass through the legs of the defender found the France international and he did the rest. His cut-back with a feint to beat Gvardiol was a work of art and he then deceived the goalkeeper with a shot to the near post to make it 2-0 and give Madrid a three-goal lead. The only downside of the first half came in the 39th minute when Bellingham was booked by the referee and will miss the first leg of the last 16 at the Bernabéu.

Hat-trick for MbappéThere was only one team on the pitch and so it proved: the hosts bossed the possession and created plenty of chances. Rodrygo tried his luck after the break, but his strike from inside the box following a nice team move went just over in the 50th minute. A clearer chance came six minutes later. Valverde, who was a constant threat down the right wing, fizzed in a cross and Mbappé’s shot in the six-yard box was well saved by Ederson. The Frenchman's impressive display was not over and in the 61st minute, he completed his second hat-trick for the Whites. He collected the ball on the edge of the area, produced a neat stepover and finished with a tight, precise left-footed drive that the visiting keeper could do nothing about.

Ovation from the BernabéuThere were more chances for Ancelotti's side from there until the end, and in the 74th minute, they had the possibility to increase their lead when Bellingham won the ball back in the opposition half and fed Vini Jr. The Brazilian's strike was brilliantly parried away by his compatriot Ederson. A minute later Manchester City had their first shot on goal, but Courtois was alert to Foden's long-range strike. And in the 78th minute, the Bernabéu had the chance to give the hero of the night and Ceballos a standing ovation for their fantastic efforts. Valverde, Vini Jr. and Tchouameni were also applauded when they were substituted. Nico González reduced the deficit in stoppage time. This was a spectacular performance from the European champions, who will face either Atlético or Bayer Leverkusen in the last 16 of the Champions League.
