A pulsating, dramatic and enthralling game at St James’ Park ended with Premier League frontrunners Liverpool failing to extend their lead at the top of the table.
Liverpool twice fell behind but battled back on both occasions, and thought they had won it when Mohamed Salah put them in front for the first time on the night in the 83rd minute.
But it wasn’t to be, as stand-in goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher decided to leave a Bruno Guimarães cross, only for Fabian Schär to steal in and equalise.
In the first half, it was the hosts who dominated. Eddie Howe’s side looked far more like the team setting the pace at the top of the table and gunning for the Premier League title.
Their press disrupted Liverpool’s build-up play time and again, and the visitors looked very much like a team missing two of their first-choice back four, with Ibrahima Konaté and Trent Alexander-Arnold both out injured.
Newcastle had enough chances before the break to take the game out of sight. Jacob Murphy hit the post from the edge of the box and Alexander Isak tried to play the ball across the face of goal when he might well have shot. Isak eventually broke the deadlock with a vicious shot high into the net.
Liverpool came out for the second half like a team meaning business. Salah set up Curtis Jones for an equaliser, and after Anthony Gordon had put Newcastle back in front, Salah struck twice – set up both times by Alexander-Arnold, who had appeared from the bench and is now the Premier League’s all-time leading defender for assists – to put Liverpool in front.
But there was to be more drama as Schär slid in to equalise in the 90th minute to earn Newcastle what was probably a well-deserved draw.
Games between these teams have been entertaining historically, and this one did not disappoint.
