The former Eagles quarterback will be traded by the Jaguars to the Bears, according to NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo. Foles will rework his contract but will still receive the $21 million guaranteed to him over the next two seasons, per Garafolo.
The Bears will trade their compensatory fourth-round pick to the Jaguars in exchange for Foles, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
UPDATE: Foles has restructured his contract to give him annual player options after each of the next two seasons based on performance, according to Schefter.
Foles will now compete with former top-three pick Mitchell Trubisky for the starting quarterback job in Chicago.
The move comes as the Jaguars have seemingly decided to go with second-year quarterback Gardner Minshew just 12 months after signing Foles to a four-year, $88 million contract.
The Jaguars will incur $15.1 million in dead money on their salary cap for trading Foles.
Foles’ tenure in Jacksonville ends after just four starts for the team. He missed the majority of the first half of last season after suffering a broken clavicle during the Week 1 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. He ended up returning to the lineup but was benched after three rough starts for Jacksonville. Minshew went 6-6 as a starter during his rookie season.
Foles’ arrival in Chicago will be a reunion of sorts. He worked with Bears coach Matt Nagy in Kansas City in 2016 and quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo was his offensive coordinator in Jacksonville. DeFilippo also served as his quarterbacks coach during his epic Super Bowl LII run after the 2017 campaign.
With Trubisky’s fifth-year contract option needing to be decided on by May, Foles’ arrival may curb the potential pickup. Foles comes into a situation where he should be favored in an offseason competition, despite Chicago’s investment in the former first-round pick sitting in the same position room.
It’s worth noting that the last time Foles and Trubisky shared the field, Foles’ Eagles defeated the Bears, 16-15, after the infamous “double-doink” during the 2018 NFC wild-card round.
