'Never Have I Ever' Season 4 Ending Explained: Who Does Devi ...
After four seasons, 40 episodes, countless laughs and tears, and an abundance of teen romance and drama, Netflix’s popular series Never Have I Ever — narrated by tennis star John McEnroe — went out with a memorable bang. Literally!
When the coming-of-age dramedy from co-creators Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher premiered back in 2020, Devi Vishwakumar (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) was a struggling sophomore grieving her dad’s death, butting heads with her mom Nalini (Poorna Jagannathan), and desperately trying to improve her social status — all while battling her intellectual rival Ben Gross (Jaren Lewison) and pining over the hottest guy in school, Paxton Hall-Yoshida (Darren Barnet).
Never Have I Ever‘s pilot opened with 15-year-old Devi praying to the gods on the first day of school for an invite to a party with alcohol and hard drugs, thinner arm hair, and a stone-cold hottie as a boyfriend. The necessities! In the years that followed, the spirited Sherman-Oaks High student lost and found herself; made and learned from major mistakes; and fell in love with Paxton, Ben, and — after a difficult journey — herself. In showing Devi’s senior year of high school and her Princeton pursuit, the fourth and final season of Never Have I Ever centers on goodbyes, change, and growth. But in a full-circle final scene, Devi ends the series just as it began: by catching up with the gods before school.
Curious about what Devi prays for this time? Wondering how Never Have I Ever wraps up everyone’s storylines after four seasons? Desperate to know if Devi ended up with Ben or Paxton? If she got into college? And how Never Have I Ever says goodbye to Sherman Oaks High and its colorful characters? Decider’s ending explained has you covered. Just be mindful that major series finale spoilers lie ahead.
Never Have I Ever Season 4, Episode 10 Ending Explained: Series Finale RecapIn Never Have I Ever‘s penultimate episode, Devi finally tells her mom she didn’t get accepted into college. Then, thanks to a broken-down limo (driven by the great Ken Marino), prom night is a bust. On the bright side, Eleanor and Trent reunite, Lindsay and Paxton spend some quality time together, and Ben climbs through Devi’s window to comfort her and encourage her to write a supplemental essay that could help her get off Princeton’s waitlist. Before the end credits roll, Paxton calls ASU and says he intends to return, and Devi pens a powerful essay for Princeton about her father’s life and how he shaped her.
Season 4, Episode 10, “Never Have I Ever…said goodbye,” opens with Devi celebrating her Princeton acceptance on the last day of high school. She swiftly embraces Ben, but their joyous exchange is cut short when he reveals he’s leaving right after graduation to spend the summer interning at a law firm in New York City. “Damn. We’ve been enemies for 12 years. It’s crazy to think it’s all just over,” Devi says. “I’m gonna miss having a nemesis,” Ben replies.
Rather than spending the majority of the episode on graduation build-up and an emotional ceremony, Never Have I Ever makes the refreshing decision to give McEnroe the mic and play a montage of Devi celebrating with family and friends in their caps and gowns. We learn that Ben was salutatorian to Devi’s valedictorian, but Never Have I Ever was never about Devi’s education. It was about relationships she lost, formed, and strengthened along the way. And by speeding through the ceremony and summer vacation, writers were able to give those relationships proper attention and closure.
After wrapping senior year in a snap, we pick up at the end of summer on Devi’s hectic last weekend before college (aka Nirmala and Len’s wedding weekend). Devi is too emotional to pack for college despite her mom’s orders, and after tossing a single boot and some notebooks in her suitcase she finds a Model UN keepsake that reminds her of Ben. She sends him a text, which he receives at a New York club at 1 a.m., and she says she wishes he was in town for Patti’s wedding. The ceremony seemed horribly timed at first, but when Devi gets the green light to invite her friends (even “Carfax” aka Paxton), the reception turns into a perfect farewell party. Fab, Addison, Eleanor, Trent, and Aneesa — plus Paxton and his new girlfriend, Ms. Thompson — all come to the party. The only one missing is Ben.
As Devi realizes she’s about to move 3,000 miles away from “everything and everyone she’s ever known,” Kamala steps in for a heart-to-heart and Devi, Eleanor, and Fabiola sneak away to share one last moment together. Meanwhile, Devi’s mom — emotional at the thought of having to say goodbye to her daughter — is comforted by Patti. And Devi finally starts to pack with some help from…her dad! Sendhil Ramamurthy returns in a vision as Mohan to help guide Devi through her emotional breakdown. When he disappears, Nalini steps in and Never Have I Ever gives us one last perfect mother-daughter heart-to-heart. The two tearfully share their bittersweet emotions and love for each other, then pack Devi’s suitcase before heading back down to the ceremony, where Devi and Kamala bust some serious moves on the dance floor.
Nalini and Andres share a kiss and Paxton and Devi share a private moment. We learn he’s headed back to ASU with plans of becoming a teacher, and he encourages Devi not to reinvent herself in college, saying, “You’re good as is, lil D.” The two share a sweet hug, and Devi admits that though he was a great boyfriend, he’s an even better friend. But wait. If Devi and Paxton aren’t endgame and Ben’s in New York, does she end the series alone?
Who Does Devi End Up With In Never Have I Ever?As the friends play a nostalgic game of “Never Have I Ever,” the one, the only Ben Gross makes his grand rom-com entrance. He flies all the way across the country, not only to tell Devi he likes her, but that he LOVES her. Devi says she loves him too, and Kamala covers so they can scooter away to Ben’s house and spend a romantic night together. When they wake in the morning, Ben says they should be together and try long-distance. Devi agrees, and heads home, surprising her mom by being wide awake, fully packed, and mostly showered right on time. Before they leave, Devi rushes upstairs to say “What’s poppin, gods?!” But instead of asking for smaller pores or a boyfriend who can do one-armed push-ups, she thanks them for her awesome life and loved ones, asks them to take care of her mom while she’s gone, and says “I’ll see you at Princeton” to a photo of her dad.
Before the series ends, a montage shows Nalini and Andres laughing over a glass of wine, Fab enjoying a robotics class with Gears, Eleanor acting with Trent close by, Paxton studying at Arizona State, Kamala and Manish (FINALLY!!!!) grabbing ice cream, and Ben and Devi cuddling in her dorm for a movie night.
“After four rocky years of high school, Devi had both the boy and the college of her dreams. There would be other dreams, of course, like becoming the first Supreme Court Justice who’s also a hip hop artist, but in this moment, our little hot head from the valley was pretty happy,” Never Have I Ever‘s trusty narrator John McEnroe said before signing off “for now.” The finale marks the end of an era for Devi and viewers alike, but could McEnroe’s ominous “for now” mean we haven’t heard the last of him yet? Either way, Never Have I Ever‘s delightful finale gives us all the closure we need.
All four seasons of Never Have I Ever are now streaming on Netflix.
